RECORD OF LODOSS WAR (episodes 1-3)

(of 5)

RECORD OF LODOSS WAR has a mighty and immense following, and for years, I have wondered how and why. Watching the first few episodes of the second series, I am still not sure. I still thought RECORD was pretty good though.

The story begins with a short retelling of the first series. Despite not having seen this first series, I was not confused or lost during the whole thing, so that is good. The background history that is given for this saga is complex and well-woven, pulling in a viewer rather quickly. The characters seemed a little stiff and predictable, but after a while the predictability gave me a feeling of a well-told favourite fairy-tale, or of a classic bedtime story. It is hard to explain this feeling, but I hope you get the idea. I am not much for spells cast with a lot of speaking and a play-by-play description as it is being cast, but I thought Deedlit's spells were still pretty neat.

I think part of the massive following comes from not only the first series, but also from the short Super-Deformed clips at the end of the episodes, called Lodoss Island. These made fun of the characters and were pretty silly but they were amusing. It was very refreshing.

Overall, I thought the first three episodes were pretty good, although it was a bit predictable. This is no different than bedtime stories - we all know them inside and out but we still ask to hear them again and again. RECORD OF LODOSS WAR seems to be one of these such stories.
