Chapter 4: The Concert and The Breakup

It took about a month to organize the whole concert, but it was well worth it. The tickets sold out within the first day of being for sale. That was always a good sign. Jesse made sure that Taylor got as many tickets as he wanted for him and friends and stuff.

“I can’t believe you talked me into doing this,” Adrian said backstage before the concert started.

“Adrian this is what you do. This is your job. What’s the big deal?” Jes asked.

“You should know the answer to that one Jes,” said Tom, “Him and Nina just got engaged so their life now consists of sex, sex, and more sex.”

“Yeah, and I’m horny right now and Nina’s not here, so I have nobody to full fill my needs.”

“Jesse will,” Tom joked.

“Like hell I will! You would though, Tom.”

“Oh yeah, my goal in life is to have sex with another man,” he said sarcastically. Everyone laughed. Jes sat down on a couch next to Tony.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“What do you mean?”

“Well you’ve been very quiet since you’ve gotten to Tulsa.”

“I just have a lot on my mind.”

“Anything I can do?”

“No, I need to deal with this by myself.”

“Okay.”

Soon the concert started. There was no opening act, so No Doubt came on right away. They did a really great show with a 2 song encore. Jes saw Taylor and a few friends right up front singing along and jumping around to every song. It was really cool.

Later that night once everybody started to leave the concert venue Tony held Jesse behind.

“I need to talk to you,” he said. Jes didn’t like the tone of his voice, but she followed him out of their dressing room and out onto the stage. They sat down on the edge.

“What’s up?” Jes asked, sorta scared of what Tony might say.

“Well,” he began, “I’m not quite sure how to say this, so put up with me for a second here. Jes, these past 2 ½ years have been really great and I do love you very much, but…”

“Aw man, there’s a but.”

“Yeah there is. But….I don’t know if we should continue this relationship any longer.”

“What? Why?”

“I’m sorry. This whole thing is just not working out for me anymore. It’s not you, I want you to know that. It’s just this whole situation of being in the band together and spending every waking moment together practically. This time apart has made me realize how much I could be missing out on my life by doing that.”

“But Tony I love you, and it’ll be way to hard for me to continue on with this band if I don’t have you.”

“No it won’t. You’ll be fine. We’re both gonna stay with the band and just be friends, like you are with Tom and Adrian.”

“I don’t know if I’ll be able to do that. You mean the world to me Tony and the thought of not being with you is really scary.”

“I know it scares me too, but I think it’ll be better for the both of us this way. I’m sorry.”

“So am I.” They sat there and looked at eachother silently for a second.

“ So is that it? Are we broken up now?” Tony asked not really able to believe himself that it was over.

“I guess so,” Jes said looking down at her hands trying to hold back the tears. She looked up again and saw that Tony had tears in his eyes also. It was hard for him too, but he knew it was the best thing to do.

“I do still love you Jes. And I’ll always be here if you need me.”

“I know.” They hugged for a long time and then Tony got up and walked away, tears falling down his face slowly.

Jes sat out on the stage for a while. She was replaying that whole conversation over and over again in her head. Maybe Tony was right. Maybe they were better off this way. It was a scary thought though. The tears began to fall hard as she sat there.
