“Wouldn’t it be easier to pour if the lid was open?” Eve said laughing at Abs who was trying to pour milk into a glass.
“Yeah guess you’re right,” Abs said putting the milk into the refrigerator, obviously having lost interest in it. “What are you doing up so late?” she asked feeling uncomfortable. Abs looked at his watch and noticed it was almost 3AM. “I couldn’t sleep,” he said going to sit on one of the kitchen stools. “Are you ok Abs?”
“Yeah I guess,” he mumbled. Not wanting to pry Eve just nodded her head and decided to get the glass of water she had come in for and head back upstairs. “You said you would be my friend, right?” he asked as she was turning to leave. She stopped to look at Abs, did she really want to know what was bothering him? Would it lead to another fight?
“Yeah, yes of course I’m your friend,” she said putting the glass down and jumping to sit on the counter. “Well if you’re my friend that must mean you’re Lizzie’s friend too.”
Lizzie? When had he started calling her that? “Yeah I guess you could say that…” she trailed off waiting for him to continue. “There’s something wrong. I can see it on her face in her eyes. She’s not as happy as when we were in London,” he said sounding dejected.
A knowing smile formed on her lips. “And you have no idea why, right?”
“She asked if I was avoiding her but, I don’t feel like I am. Or if I am then it must all be unconscious because I just don’t see it. I think that she feels left out, what with you being mean to her,” he said looking Eve straight in the eyes.
A look of surprise and irritation passed through her features as she thought of what to say. “I admit that I have been less than friendly with her, but I have my reasons.” She stopped not knowing if to continue or not. “Abs have you considered that maybe she doesn’t particularly care what I think about her, or even if I’m friendly to her or not?”
Abs opened his mouth to say something but she continued on. “I mean, she hasn’t mentioned one word to me about it. And I know Liz, she would be in my face if she really wanted to be friends again. She knows that it’s not going to happen over night. But she hasn’t been all that nice to me either. As a matter of fact she has given me the evil eye a couple of times.”
“No she has not. Lizzie doesn’t have an evil bone in her body, let alone an eye,” Abs said defending her.
“Don’t get me wrong, I know deep down she doesn’t mean it. It’s that she thinks I’m taking something that belongs to her.”
“Like what?” he asked not understanding. “How can you be so dense? Anyway, I’ll leave it up to you to figure it out. I really have to be going to bed now.” She slid off the counter and was about to leave when she saw the dumbfounded look on his face. “I’m going to have to help you aren’t I?”
“Ok listen and listen closely. Don’t expect me to tell you straight out because it’s not my place to do it. What have you been preoccupied with since you got here?” she asked.
“Trying to convince you to get back together,” he said not understanding where this was going. “Alright, and what have you been neglecting?”
“I guess you can say most everyone else,” he answered. “Now when you all were back in London, whom did you spend most of your time with?” Abs eyes suddenly got a bit brighter as he started to catch on. “With Lizzie…”
“And if who is keeping you up with worry?” This time he smiled as he said, “Lizzie.”
“Now were getting somewhere,” she said sitting next to him. “So what I have to do is make sure that she doesn’t feel left out and everything will be alright, right?” he said his mind working in a million directions. The smile that Eve had had faded in an instant. “Of all the…Ok let me ask you this, if you’re here to get me back, why are you up worrying about Liz instead of how you’re going to accomplish you’re task?”
“I, uh…dunno?” Eve gave him an exasperated look and bit her tongue so as not to offend him with the words she wanted to call him. “Alright, maybe you don’t know because you haven’t dealt with your feelings yet. I can understand that, you could be confused, right?” she said trying to explain his lack of insight.
“Erm, right,” Abs said sounding unsure. “Of course maybe you’ve even repressed those feelings because you’re scared to face them. Well Abs now is the time to just bring them out.”
She was now just making absolute no sense to him. “Yeah…”
Eve looked happy that she had helped him out so much. “Now I can go to sleep knowing I helped you. It’s all just going to take time, you can’t force things like this you know?” she said walking to the door. “Goodnite Abs and make sure to think on what I said.”
“Sure Eve, I’ll make sure to do that,” he said still very much confused.
