Vivian awoke to knocking on her door, she groggily got out of bed and made her way downstairs. When she opened the door standing in front of her was a very stunned looking Scott. “Hey what are you doing here?” she asked wondering why he had his mouth wide open.
“I, uh, Lydia asked me to give you a ride to the airport,” Scott said looking away. Vivian gave him a weird look then walked into the house to see what time it was. “Scott it’s only 7 o’clock. Lydia said 9:30, why are you here so early?” she said noticing he was still not looking at her. “Is something wrong?” Vivian asked closing the door behind him.
He finally turned to look at her but couldn’t hide his discomfort. “Sorry ‘bout the time. Do you want to get dressed?” he asked looking away again. Suddenly Vivian knew what was making him feel uncomfortable, she was wearing practically nothing. Vivian only had on a white tank top and boy short underwear. “Ah yeah, why don’t I go get ready, while you, uhm, you can make us breakfast, ok?” Vivian stammered as she made her way upstairs trying to cover herself as best as possible with her arms.
“Yeah sure,” Scott said smiling after she started running up the stairs. He kept on smiling as he finished making breakfast for them half an hour later. It had been quite a shock to see a half-naked Vivian answering her door, but it hadn’t been a bad shock. He sat at the table waiting for her to return, and imagining her as she had been just minutes before.
Vivian walked in a few minutes later to find a grinning Scott just staring at the table. “Hey Scott,” she said still feeling a little embarrassed about earlier. She sat across from him and poured herself a glass of orange juice. It seemed like he hadn’t heard her, he was still just grinning with a blank look on his face. “Scott are you ok?” she asked reaching over to shake his shoulder.
“Wha..” Scott said coming out of his trance, “hey you’re back.” Scott got up to bring the food over and placed a plate in front of her. “Yeah I’ve been back. Are you ok? You just sat there with a weird grin on your face,” Vivian said looking worriedly at him. “No, I’m fine I was just thinking about stuff,” he said sitting down.
“Sorry ‘bout coming this early, but Lydia said that I should come wake you up, because Nan called her yesterday the flight has changed to 9 o’clock,” he said explaining. Vivian tasted the eggs he had made and tried not to throw them up. “So how’s the food?” he asked taking a big forkful into his mouth. She couldn’t answer him because she was drinking all the orange juice trying to pass down the awful eggs.
“They’re not that bad are they?” he asked worried. She looked at him and started laughing. “Bad? That’s not a strong enough word. But I’ve had worse so don’t worry,” she said pouring herself some cereal from the pantry.
As they reached the airport the one thing running through Vivian’s mind was what Nan would think of Scott. Would she like his kindness? Would she care if he was hyperactive? After about a minute of this kind of thoughts she reprimanded herself for even caring. After all it wasn’t Scott she was going out with…but it was him that repeatedly went out of his way to make her feel welcome since she had arrived in England. She mentally slapped herself for thinking of him again, she had to focus on Abs not Scott. She looked over to him and couldn’t help but smile, too bad he was taken…
Why is she looking at me like that? Scott asked himself as he parked the car in the runway the plane would be landing at. He inspected himself in the mirror to see if he had anything on his face but he didn’t. From the corner of his eye he could tell she was debating over something. She would smile then frown, as if opposite thoughts were going through her mind. When he couldn't take the silence anymore he turned to look at her, but she quickly turned away.
“So Nan is like your surrogate mother, right?” he asked trying to make conversation. “Yeah, she’s been there for both me and Lydia since my parents died when I was young,” she said getting a sad look on her face. “Does it still hurt to talk about your parents? If it does we don’t have to talk about it,” he said softly.
She turned to look at him, no one had said that before. People had always just asked their questions not caring if the subject pained her or not. “It does hurt sometimes, but I can’t just avoid those feelings. I grew up without the comfort of two parents, sometimes I envy Lydia for having hers. But then I damn her for running from them and not appreciating what they might have offered her,” she said sadly.
Scott couldn’t take his eyes away from her, her features were so beautiful even now when they were laced with sorrow. “I may bemoan my lack of parents but I thank God everyday for giving me Nan and Lydia. They are my family, and I can’t say I don’t have everything I ever wanted. And now I have a bigger family with Ryan and Becca,” she said finally breaking into a smile.
“Besides Becca and Ryan you also have Abs and me now,” he said reminding her. He regretted his words when he noticed her smile falter a little. “Yeah I have you and Abs now,” she said distractedly looking towards the descending airplane. “Looks like they’re here,” she said getting ready to leave the car.
He leaned over intending to open the door for her but not seeing his movements she went to do the same. Their hands met on the door handle, but instead of moving them away both left them where they were. Vivian noticed the contrast between her hand and his, hers was softly delicate while his was much bigger. She turned to look at him and found him staring at her.
His heart began to beat faster as he inhaled her perfume, he was so close to her now that their lips were only inches apart. Looking at her eyes he noticed they had gotten a deep blue green color, involuntarily he moved towards her lips. She knew what was coming, he was going to kiss her but instead of moving away as she should have she leaned towards him.
