PSP Pictures and Information

The PSP is smaller than I imagined but the screen is large.

UMD Mini Disc

Pictures do not do this system justice

The PSP plugs in the same as the digital camera with the same USB cord.

The PSP works as a file storage/transfer device. During my attempts to play different files on the PSP I noticed that it will let me create new folder on the memory card and store any type of file on it.

Once pluged in to the Lifebook the computer recognizes it as an external hard drive and will let you download (mp3)music, pictures,(MPEG-4) video, and games directly into it by using the copy and paste method.

What you see here are files in the PSP displayed on the Lifebook screen.Files are downloaded onto the memory card in a couple of seconds.

This huge 1 gigabite memory card will be available on the 10th of January, click on the picture for more info.

Deanna Simon asked if there would be a problem with region coding and would I be able to the play movies being released?

The PSP you see here is from Japan and will play all of the Movies and software released in Japan. Games and movies are not available in North America yet but it appears that the games will not be region coded for North America and the movies will be, so the North Americian movies may not play on this unit. You can buy the memory cards at Sony store as they are the same as the ones used in the latest Sony digital cameras.

Phil Shoore asked weather the PSP plays MP4 files

Out of the box it plays Mp3s and can display Jpeg files, a file converter is available for download from the Sony store in Japan for $10us. See quote below from digitalbackspin.com

The japanese Sony Style store online is offering up a download of Imageconverter 2 which allows you to convert several graphic formats as well as video formats to one playable on the PSP. According to a very bad translation of the site (thanks Babelfish!) we know it will work with the following....

Input format (Animated picture) AVI/MPEG1/2/4/QuickTime (*1), WMV (*2) animated picture file of type. "Giga Pocket" (above Ver.3.0)/the video recording file with "of Do VAIO" (*3). (Still picture) BMP/JPEG/GIF/PGP/PNG

We'd suggest getting a friend who is fluent in Japanese to help you out but from what we can gather, you'll need a windows PC, no macs sorry, and about 1,000 yen - that's about $9.50.

If you are converting WMV or Quicktime you'll also need those players and codecs installed on your PC as well.

Phil Shoore pointed out that the memory card that the PSP uses is different from the one used in our cameras.
The memory card from our camera will not work in the PSP but the memory card for the PSP will work in the camera thanks to Sony making the new memory cards backwards compatible with an adapter that comes with the new memory cards when purchased.

Sharon Geall asked what the sound quality is like and if the PSP vibrated like the PS2 controller.
The sound from the unit is tinny and not to impressive, with the ear bud headphones the sound is great, with a set of decent headphones I would think the sound would be incredible.

No, the PSP does not vibrate.

Please feel free to email me with any other questions and I will post them here.
