THE COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION
Chicago World's Fair of 1893

City by the Shining Sea

The World's Columbian Exposition (Chicago World’s Fair of 1893)

Marked the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus sailing to the New World. (Yeah, I thought that was in 1492, but who's counting?)
The fair was considered the greatest event of its kind in history.
The first Ferris Wheel was built for this exposition.
The hamburger was introduced to the United States.
Cracker Jacks were introduced.
The White City represented an unprecedented collaboration of artists, architects, engineers, sculptors, painters, and landscape architects who joined forces to create a single work - an ideal model city. The style is known most commonly as the Beaux Arts style.
The Columbia Fountain was at the center of the Court of Honor of the White City. The sculpture featured Columbia enthroned on a triumphal barge guided by Time and heralded by Fame. She was rowed by four figures on each side, representing Science, Industry, Agriculture, and the arts. The barge was preceded by eight mounted seahorses and the water was sprayed from a semicircle of dolphins at the rear. The sculpture was placed upon a circular, 150 foot diameter base.
