Backstreet Banner X-Change

In the Beginning

It was dark. Not the star less night kind of dark. It was truly black. The deep blackness of a blind man. It seemed endless, when it went on for a mere light-year. If you believe that one light-year is a great distance, you are sadly mistaken. For even a light-year has it’s limits. Although they are far beyond understanding for the narrow-mindedness of a mere human.

In the midst of this darkness stood a man. Or was it a woman? None knew, none had ever known. You must understand that the terms “man”, “woman”, and even “human” are used quite loosely here. This creature, though it once carried the title of “human”, now no longer belongs to any group, any race, or any species. For the purposes of this story, we shall call this creature The One. For it is truly One. Belonging nowhere save the very fabric of space and time.

One was the master of past and present. One did not control the universe, yet watched it pass by. No one knew who One was, few knew that One existed. One had no name, no face, no identity. One had been away from Earth so long that One no longer had any need of a body. One walked the Earth unknown to mere mortals.

I shall bring you to a place that is an area that even The One is reluctant to go. Never dream for an instant that The One had any great power, nor that One was the controller of the very universe. There are indeed greater powers than The One, but they will not be mentioned here. The One comes here to save a planet that could be the universe’s only hope. It is a sad little green-and-blue planet, with no special traits save the fact that it had life. This One had been chosen to help protect this small piece of rock solely because The One had once lived upon it. The third rock from the Sun was in great danger, and The One had been sent for to discover the identities of the humans who would save their planet.

All this brings us back to our ‘dark place’. The One called upon a globe from which to discover the saviors of this planet. The Earth had been in danger before, and Another One had been called to choose the Earth’s helpers. Another One had failed. The One would not.

The size of the globe remains undetermined, for some say that it is no larger than a golf ball, while others insist that it out-sizes a boulder. One began to move One’s “hands” over the globe, muttering words that are known to mortals as the language of magic. Upon finishing the incantation, One stared into the globe. The swirls of color slowly began to make sense. It revealed ten humans, five males, five females. These were no ordinary beings, each of the five males belonged to the musical group and pop sensation, Roughouse. The females were the spouses to these singers. Ten names appeared in the globe:

“Sean Willaford, Kristen Willaford; Jarred LaTona, Claudia LaTona; Bret Willits, LeighAnne Willits; Zach Wallace, Amanda Wallace; Jordan Evans, Mandee Evans.”

One recited the names slowly and carefully. One’s voice was cold enough to make a grown man beg for mercy, sweet enough to ease the most upset child. They were so carefree, so unknowing of what was about to be bestowed upon them. One began to smile ever so slowly. One’s smile terrified all who looked upon it. “Who knew, who knew.........”
