A longish time ago in Orlando, Florida, there were three young men who kept seeing each other at auditions. Meet AJ McLean, a long lean dude with a really cool haircut; Howie Dorough, or Howie D, a Puerto Rican-Irish dude with great big puppydog eyes; and Nick Carter, an adorable heartbreaker. Each of these boys had good credentials in musical theatre, TV ads and film. One day they found themselves waiting to audition and they started harmonizing an old Temptations hit. They decided they sounded pretty darn good a cappella ...
In 1994, Kevin was working with a Top 40 cover band in Lexington, but he left, disillusioned, and decided to go to Orlando. He found himself a job there as a tour guide in Disney World, and spent his free time writing songs. One day, he heard about the 3 guys who "harmonize all the time" and arranged a meeting. When he met AJ, Howie and Nick, he was blown away by their terrific harmony and their slick dance manoeuvres. Without much ado, Kevin joined the trio and the very next morning, he called up Brian and told him about the boys. They needed a fifth to complete the rich sound that defines BsB today and Brian hopped on a plane to Florida and the five of them did one final audition. The quintet was formed and they named themselves after Orlando's famous flea market: Backstreet Market!
Soon after BsB were formed, they found their managers Donna and Johnny Wright. The Wrights took the boys' talent very seriously and wasted no time in getting them out on the road and getting record company executives to watch them in action. In early April 1994, Jive Records were so impressed they signed them up almost straight away! BsB now had to make a record!
The Boys' first single "We've Got It Goin' On" was produced by Ace of Base producer Denniz Pop and their big hit "Get Down" was written by Fun Factory's Smooth D. The album producers Vit Rein and Tin Allen wanted to use the Boys' gift for harmony and their youthful exuberance to the fullest.
