Waiting anxiously in the car as my mother drove my younger sister and I to the second concert of the Black and Blue world tour, one of the main concerns we had for this year’s concert was whether or not our seats would be any good, granted that when we purchased them online it had a warning sign on them that they would be particle view seats. That concern of ours vanished when we sat down to our seats to see that this year’s stage setup was a massive stage that was almost 250 feet long, that even overlapped some of the seating! This year’s opening act was a new soloist that came from the Backstreet Boys’ new label. Her name was Krystal and she performed about 3 or 4 songs, including a well known song from Maria Carey, "I’ll Be There" and was escorted off the stage by Obee Morant, an old percussionist for the BSB Band.
It wasn’t until 9:20 PM that the boys took the stage with spectacular effects, starting with a meteor shower of pyro that ended up in five puffs of smoke. As those puffs of smoke seemed to clear up, so did the images of the Backstreet Boys when they finally took the stage with ten dancers performing the fan oriented anthems, "Everyone" and "Larger Than Life." They then went into performing, "Shining Star" before they went into their first costume change of the evening.
Kevin later came out on stage wearing a classy white tuxedo and welcomed the crowd to their Black and Blue world tour. He seemed to charm the entire arena as he tried to calm down the eager crowd that thirst for more BSB action. Only a few minutes went by before the rest of the fellows popped up on stage all wearing those elegant white tuxes sitting upon chairs. They then slowed the concert down and sung, "What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful)" followed by "Yes I Will" with a sophisticated cane routine. Now standing upon this metal ladder set that stood up in the back of the stage, the Backstreet Boys went into "More Than That." Going back in time to the first song released off the Millennium CD the boys continued the concert with, "I Want It That Way."
The guys then do another costume change going from tasteful tuxedos to sleek black clothing to wear as they brought the concert back up to tempo with the song, "Not For Me" with AJ doing his impressions of Michael Jackson with his few crouch grabs here and there. However, the lights begin to dim and shadows of low blue lights cast their spells against the walls as they then go into the song, "Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely." In this song, all five of them walk slowly to both the right and left sides of the stage, to get close and intimate with their fans. Then the audience remised of the good old days when BSB first came to the US by performing, "I’ll Never Break Your Heart." Followed by, "I Promise You (With Everything I Am)" and "How Did I Fall In Love With You."
Afterward, crew members pull a large chest onto the stage. The guys then ask the audience if they really like their attire. While this is going on, Kevin walked off to the side of the stage and was given a large flag with the country "Argentina" written on it. He then walks back over to the rest of the Backstreet Boys and shows them the flag and wraps it around his waist like a skirt. AJ then cracked on him and his skirt fetish. The boys then one by one got into the chest labeled, "BSB Wardrobe" to change costume once again. Brian got in first, followed by Nick, Howie, AJ, and last but not least Kevin, who before getting into the chest closed it and suggested that they should throw it into the ocean, so that he may begin his solo career (but we all know that he was just kidding). He too, then got inside the chest and joined the guys inside their private dressing room. It was here the entire audience got to watch them change costumes and see them get ready. It was also here they sprayed AJ with green silly string, but have no fear, AJ retaliated with his notorious super soaker.
As they finish up dressing, the lights suddenly go out and the Backstreet Boys reappeared on a small circle stage in the center of the floor, which took everyone by surprise! There, the performed a sweet rendition of "Time." After finishing up the song "Time" they then spoke to the audience and reminded everyone that on super bowel Sunday, Nick will be turning twenty-one! Afterwards, they returned to the main stage by this gorgeous bridge that seemed to come down from the roof, while everyone was watching the Backstreet Boys. When they got back to the main stage they sang, "Answer To Our Life" while a environmental video played in the background in honor of the new organization Kevin started which is called, Just Within Reach, named after the initials of his late father.
They continued the show with, "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)" and "As Long As You Love Me." Afterwards, they reappeared in cow boy hats singing a real oldie, "If You Stay." It is during this song, Brian gave away his cow boy hat to a person in the audience, which really got the crowd excited. As a special treat to the fans, the Backstreet Boys performed, "Everybody" which was altered, giving it a new sound and then they performed "Get Another Boy Friend." Finally, AJ goes onto the stage by himself and begins to chat with the audience saying that the next song that was about to be performed was going to be the last, when all of a sudden his cell phone goes off. He wavers with the audience on whether or not if he should answer it and the audience all agree that he should answer it. He does, and they guys all come out on stage and perform BSB’s newest released single, "The Call." The crowd went wild and it was then the guys came back out for an encore, performing "Shape of My Heart" as they all went around greeting fans.
After all the Backstreet Boys left the stage, AJ ran up and down the stage for one last thrill, followed by Howie who went back out to retrieve him. And with flashes of lights and wild explosions of fireworks the concert ended, once again out doing their last concert tour. As a special surprise, it was revealed that stars such as Enrique Iglesias were seated in special VIP boxes away from the fans.
