EVENT REPORT - Dave Owen - I arrived at this event, with Geoff & Chris Regan, at about 19:05. Although the weather prospects looked fairly poor, I decided to bring my new 4 inch f4 reflecting telescope and a table to put it on. There had been lots of rain but the clouds soon cleared to allow my little scope to show Jupiter and 3 of its moons, with a 12x eyepiece. I then found M31 fairly quickly, thanks to the 5 x 24 finderscope - my previous 4 inch f4 reflector did not have a finderscope and was, consequently, much more difficult to use.

At about 19:30 it started to rain again. Covers were quickly put on Jim Stacey's C6 GoTo telescope, Lawrence Ashworth's 4 inch refractor and Dave Bentley's 85mm refractor. I just carried my 4 inch scope indoors.

Brendan Martin entertained our small number of visitors with two illustrated talks - apparently, lots of people had phoned up about this event but had not turned up due to their not liking the look of the weather. In fact, there was a fair amount of clear weather for this event but we were only able to attract less than a dozen visitors. The previous week, on a drier but much more cloudy evening, we had 90 visitors!

By 19:50 the rain had stopped and the clearing skies allowed good views of a rising gibbous Moon. I was especially impressed with the view of M15 in Jim Lawler's 25 x 100 binoculars.

Many thanks to the Stadt Moers Ranger, Aaron, who allowed us to use his kitchen for hot drinks.
