EVENT REPORT - Dave Owen - After getting lost on the way, I arrived at this event at 19:14 with Jim Lawler and John Simcock. Thanks to Jim Lawler's Volvo Estate, we were able to bring along John Simcock's 14 inch f4.5 Dobsonian reflector. Unfortunately, only those who arrived before we got there enjoyed any clear skies. They were able to enjoy views of the amazing Comet Holmes, a naked eye comet only slightly fainter than the pole star. One of these lucky ones was Brendan Martin, who was able to see the comet with his 10 inch Dobsonian reflector.
Jim Stacey set up his Celestron C6 telescope and Dave Bentley set up his 85mm short focus refractor. Jay Conway had also set up his C5 telescope. Other LAS members present were Marie Conway, Alan Dennott, Graham Roberts and Pam McAdams.
The two Knowsley Rangers present, Darren and Kathy were very helpful and provided plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits.
At 20:04 it was still 100% cloudy and Geoff Regan was well into his illustrated talk inside the Visitors Centre.
At 20:25 it was still 100% cloudy. By now, our steady stream of visitors had reached 7. It would eventually reach 14. Which, with the addition of 2 Rangers and 12 LAS members made a total of 28, despite being 100% cloudy for virtually all the time we were there.
At about 20:30, Brendan Martin started an illustrated talk.
At about 21:15 we started to pack our telescopes away and, as might have been expected, the skies cleared at about 23:00 to enable some of us to view Comet Holmes with the LAS 16 inch Dobsonian reflector at Pex Hill.
