If Value Had a Meaning

by

Ruth Y. Nott

If I could put a value on all the things I did,
on every little public thing, on all the things I've hid...
If value had a meaning from inception to the end,
I'd find the thing I valued most was the making of a friend.

Whether right across the backyard fence, or halfway 'round the world,
whether second grade companions, or a rest home's senior girls...
to have a friend to talk to, to believe in and to trust,
to walk beside or write to, or think calling is a must,
to hold inside your heart when your heart is open wide,
and the you that you cannot conceal is naked there outside...

Then for such a friend be thankful, be loving, and be kind.
Let them know how much they mean in letters underlined!
For the value of such friendship is so very, very great
it cannot just be measured by a formula or tape!
No equation would be long enough, every ruler would be too small.
No one could count quite high enough. No accountant you could call
could estimate the value from inception to the end
of the most important thing you did... the making of a friend!
