ALOHA FROM P-MÄKI

_______________ The following story isn´t about Worms either but there are two Worms´ musicians involved and it´s very funny so it deserves to be covered here. Vesku, Worms´ drummer for a brief period in 1998 originated this. It happened in the summer of 1996 as far as I can remember.

p-mäki We played in the group MISTEART, led by the controversial singer/songwriter SIR MISTER TAF from Pieksämäki, Vesku´s hometown some seventy km:s from Jyväskylä.

(Misteart is probably a take on "Artemis". Sir Mr Taf loves to play with words, just like myself.)

Sir Mr Taf booked a gig at a weekend festival in Pieksämäki and we rehearsed a set for the occasion - about thirty minutes of his own songs and a few covers of his favourite Finnish tunes.

Vesku worked as a chef those days. He had the nightshift just that week, so the arrangements proved a bit tricky. The gig was originally scheduled on Saturday. Vesku managed to talk a colleague to do his shift that night and promised to compensate it some other time. Then Wednesday afternoon when we were having the last rehearsals at Sir Mr Taf´s home in Pieksämäki the festival organizers phoned us and told that we had to play the next evening, i.e. Thursday.

There was no way Vesku could find a stand-in for the next day, neither for the gig nor his job. We were totally confused but on our way back to Jyväskylä Vesku got the totally stupid/brilliant idea: let´s videotape his part and show that in a TV on the stage, the drumming playing through the P.A. We started laughing so silly we had stop the car and drive into the side of the road to avoid a crash.

When we got back home we brought my drumkit into the local rock club Lutakko´s stage, found a friend with a videocamera and taped the set. Vesku played the stuff by himself, no demo-vocals in the earphones or anything, very primitive. He remembered the stuff so well that he played very accurately and did next to no mistakes, I think he missed one song´s ending by two bars or something very minor. Well done when you think of the conditions.

We made up a cover-up story, stuff like "we came here by helicopter and our drummer is aerophobic. So he decided to play his part in Jyväskylä and it´s televised via satellite". We placed the TV in front of the drumkit. We thought playing with the TV might be very difficult, but it wasn´t after all. The gig got considerable attention and became well-known in the regional rocklore. Please note that this happened years before Elvis´ "comeback" where the TCB band played live and El appeared on the screen.
