When I was diagnosed with diabetes almost 13 years ago, my endocrinologist promised me a cure before I graduated high school. Well, I am 24 and no matter what they tell you - few advances have been made towards a cure. Yes, treatment has improved...but at what cost? I am tired of being lied to. I don't want to hear the words "A Cure is coming" anymore. I am sick of it! I want to hear the words "A Cure is HERE". May is National Cystic Fibrosis Month and normally the CF Great Strides is during that month as well. Every October there are Walk For The Cures all over America going on (Diabetes) in Atlanta, Orlando, KC, St. Louis, etc. Look one up that's near you and sign up today! One of my friends (Crystal), just lost yet another good friend to Cystic Fibrosis. This is the 15th good friend she has lost in the past 8 years. After years of being on the transplant list, Crystal finally received her lung transplant. I am so grateful, she made it when several of her friends also on the transplant list did not. Even with her new lungs, she'll need new ones in about 20 years again. Please don't forget all of those diseases that fall under the "not cancer" category. Yes, cancer is serious and it kills - but so do CF and Diabetes (I have lost 1 friend and possibly others that I lost contact with but who I know were doing badly when we last spoke.). Even if you can't donate any money, at least pray that one day soon we will find a cure for CF and diabetes. And support stem cell research - not necessarily embryonic stem cell research though, because they've done successful studies with adult stem cells. Right now, it's our best chance at curing CF and Diabetes. Crystal has CFRD - Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes. Don't forget the children who may not have had the chance to be kids...
