This New Year's Day

A whole year dies tonight. Maybe one day what we did
won’t matter as much as what we didn’t get to wish.
If you act on it now, maybe the dreams will stop.
I don’t know where it started, but I can see how much we’ve lost.
If you say it enough times, out loud and in your mind -- does that really make it real?
I’ll interrupt you and we won’t ever know how it could have felt or how it should feel.

This isn’t the ending I wanted, bleeding the angel barricade.
Now I know it won’t ever happen, and it won’t even matter; anyway it’s getting late.
We wondered if there was something across each other’s bay that won’t leave us like this horror,
hands blue like this, with our hearts all in opera and our heads all in drama.

We live forwards
and understand backwards.
Something’s gonna change
this New Year’s Day

Fireworks go off and we go on and wonder how to put the Mess into words.
I don’t trust myself with rhyming with the static tonight as what you want from this world
‘cause the best part’s finding the words that could make the difference;
The worst part’s finding that no one will listen.
I’m not the reason that you left
I’m just the reason you won’t come back

We live forwards
And understand backwards.
Something’s gonna change
this New Year’s Day

I never liked being undone, but I’ve left you open and waiting inside.
I never liked being let down, but the best kisses I give are lies.
It was a promise on my tongue,
it was a burn on yours.

The year makes you pass through a little slower
and notice the sky’s a little lower.
It’s a small world when wanting what you could not have in real life,
It’s a big world of things left behind.

We live forwards
and understand backwards.
Something’s gonna change
this New Year’s Day
