Once (For Jim)

I had my name signed up to do too much.
I can remember you, but I cannot touch.
I overdid it once, now I go nothing left in me.
But the sun will come out the same tomorrow.
And if the sun has to come out tomorrow
Let him feed my flame
Let him rain.

It felt better when it wasn’t happening to me.
My mouth was open for you to see.
The sun doesn’t even know when you feel it.
He likes to be alone sometimes
He speeds through my red lights.

You’ll try out the new stuff when you come back.
I’ll see you again when it’s all white and black.
And if the sun has to come out tomorrow
Let him feed my flame
Let him rain.

I will write to you in ten years time
And if the sun has to come out tomorrow
Let him feed my flame
Let him rain.

The sun doesn’t know when you feel it.
The sun doesn’t care if you feel it.
