Hours Away

Sol was always prettier at the fix of dawn
To remind you you’re not done till they say you’re gone,
And every hero is a father to someone else’s son.
I wore you like an eclipse and didn’t think about it
You live here forever but you never know this town like you did
When you learned how to learn down at the Hype downtown.
Now I’m a rock rolling in a blue car trying to look so proud

I was stoned in Fairfax, one of four good kids with weak stomachs.
I was down in the day with a flame upon my lips and a wish between my hips.
You could say that people combined can make a horrible sound to set it right
Well, I’ve heard a lonely voice more than once, and it’s only in a hell of a life.

Don’t wait for me to explain what I am to you.
I came to my senses for you
Back then I wasn’t any prettier
Back then you just didn’t know any better
You get to loving the hours away
Just to keep the other hungers at bay

That’s the last time we’re gonna look so low to see each other so high.
I was just working in the garden, but I’d stay on into the nights
For the nerve of what is said in the South’s blue lights
Nobody sleeps alone much anymore, but now I need my space to love
Beauty? I see it in the holy man because I cannot touch.

Your one chance to be born is gone,
And you’re gonna fade away one day
But Heaven’s gonna direct it,
And the next exit’s only hours away

Independence Day went off like an exhaust pipe burst
You’d let me fill up and drink if you were sure it’d kill my thirst
I’d move from ritual to romance if I was sure a belief could move the earth
Where’d it come from, and where is it going? Did you think it was going to change?
Try to save some souls in the jungle, come home empty, and you try to stay the same.

Don’t wait for me to explain what I am to you.
I came to my senses for you
Back then I wasn’t any prettier
Back then you just didn’t know any better
You get to loving the hours away
Just to keep the other hungers at bay

Nobody can live a day without dying
And still nobody can stop trying
Hollywood’s an uphill climb.
We still got plenty of time
Lead love, don’t lead love on
Stand up straight,
watch what you say
‘cause soon it’s gone

Your one chance to be born is gone,
And you’re gonna fade away one day.
But Heaven’s gonna direct it,
And the next exit’s only hours away.
