A Christmas Blessing
As I was getting ready for bed I heard a knock at the door
I went to see who it was and there stood a man who I never saw before
No gloves were on his hands, his feet were covered in snow and he wore no coat
"I'm hungry, I'm tired, and I'm thirsty" he said as he cleared his throat
"May I please come in, I won't stay long, I just need a warm place to rest”
I could not turn my back on him so I granted him his heartfelt request
I gave him something to eat and to drink and he sat in front of the fireplace
He didn't say a word he just sat there and the warmth he embraced
I tried to find out where he was from but no information he gave
A necklace hung from his neck but no name on it was engraved
He stayed about an hour or two then he went on about his business
He left behind an envelope but there was no forwarding address
I ran outside to catch him but he was no where to be found
There weren't even any footprints on the snow covered ground
In my hand I held what appeared to be a letter or a note
As I opened it "Thank you and God Bless you" were in quotes
Thank you for giving me the best kind of Christmas present
The love you showed within your heart made my stay very pleasant
If only more people took the time to show that much concern
And do unto others without wanting anything in return
Then everyone would receive the best gift ever given to mankind
Because compassion, kindness and love does not turn the other cheek nor is it blind
So regardless what presents are under the tree they hold no comparison to what the heart gives
And that my friend is where the true meaning of Christmas lives
So keep that in mind where ever you go and in the things you say and do
Because the best present you can give to someone is what God himself gave to you
And that is what you had done and that made you stand out among the rest
Because you did not look upon me as a stranger but instead you treated me like I was a guest
There are no words left to express the job you had done
May the love you had shown continue to be a blessing for every one.
