The Dirty People

Oh, the marvel of the industrial system,
It's always pumping like a super piston.
Only not everyone does it include,
Those who can't take bosses and strict schedules
Are systematically eschewed,
Single mothers, artists, and minorities
Are shunted aside and denied opportunities.
Give these good people an income with dignity,
their added spending will recharge the economy.

Make it to the top without getting caught
Is modern man's creed,
The only vice is doing good deeds.
Be like the executive, we are told,
Then you can come in out of the cold,
Be cunning, clever and shrewd,
Aggresive, arrogant, and rude.
Disrespect to the kid on the street,
Looking lonely and wearing cold feet,
Being harassed by the cop on his beat.
It doesn't take a psychic to predict,
It won't be long till this kid's a convict.

The war on poverty has failed I understand.
The Liberals wrung their hands
And sent money overseas to the impoverished lands,
Which the Conservatives, opportunistically,
Used on infrastructure to lure high tech companies,
Who built plants and refineries,
Promising jobs and prosperity,
Over there in the poor people's land.
Ensuing high costs, and no jobs for unskilled hands,
Forced them into urban ghettos in their homeland.

The dirty people living in the street,
The down and out sleeping in the park,
The violent escaped convict running on his feet,
The urban-guerrilla terrorist working in the dark,
Except by chance and circumstance,
These people are you and me,
There is only one humanity.
We're all drinking Coke and watching television,
Waiting for some meaning in this existence
Of science, technology, and materialism,
To bring us to that promised deliverance,
And out of a hopeless alienation
Dating from mechanization.
