Mitch Carter, the author of Spirit and Poverty, believes the world is facing a crisis of values. He believes the brightness of the modern world and its technology has so eroded and stripped us of spiritual values that we are left only with material values. He believes it is incumbent on us all to set in place a new set of spiritual values that are relevant and counterbalance the modern world and its technology.
Two basic metaphors underlie the verse in Spirit and Poverty. The first one is of the individual in us all being trapped in a world of selfishness and the only way out is to be able to act on behalf of more than oneself. In this metaphor, the suffering in the world is the individual's opportunity to break out of selfishness, an impossible task. The second metaphor is of a world of haves and have-nots both equally unhappy. In this metaphor, happiness to the haves can be found by tapping the goodness in their hearts and relieving the indignities of the have-nots bringing them happiness as well.
