Under the ice the fishermen's hooks
tickle the river, hunt for life.
She lets silver fish slip into their hands,
she lets them return again and again.
Her water is kissed with veils thrown by the wind:
spots of stretched ripples,
dapples that reach to join into white sheets, which
the lady throws off in misty gestures to sleep in the sun.
The snow blows in scratches and whispers down her sides:
she is ever aware of the desire of man
to touch the world that she hides. (~ Sara Moore, Feb.94, Novgorod, Russia)
