STUART MCCARRELL

Stuart McCarrell was a well known Chicago poet and playwright. He was also publisher of the well respected Xenia Press. He was also a great supporter of many struggling poets in the Chicago area. He owned an engineering company that manufactured dental electrosurgery equipment.

His plays were performed in Chicago and New York.

His plays included a series of four plays on different time periods of Goethe's life focusing on the women that Goethe was involved with. The series consists of: Lili, Charlotte, Christiane, and Bettina. He also wrote a modern version of Faust. One of his best known plays was Other Summer: Emily Dickinson And The Great Love Affair That She Encouraged.

His books of poetry included the excellent Voices, Insistent Voices, New York, Visions, Struggles, Voices, and A Wild Serenity.

He was a long time resident of Wicker Park and a great friend of the author Nelson Algren in the later years that he lived in Chicago. He was one of the founders of The Nelson Algren Commitee. He died in the early 2000's.
