JOHN LOGAN


John Logan was born in Iowa in 1923. From 1951 to 1963 he was teaching at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana. In the early 60's, he ran classes at The University of Chicago in the Loop which eventually developed into a poetry workshop which met at different locations in the Chicago area.

The group of poets from the workshop published the poetry magazine Choice. Some of the groups members included: Marvin Bell, Barbara Harr, William Hunt, Naomi Lazard, and Bill Knott.

His first book of poetry was Cycle for Mother Cabrini in praise of the nun who ministered to the poor in Chicago and who Cabrini Green is named after.

He taught for several years at San Francisco State University and many years at The State University of New York. He was known as one of the best teachers of poetry in America. He died in 1987.
