Charles Simic was born in 1938, in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. In 1954 he and his family emigrated to the United States and he lived in Chicago until 1958 when he moved to New York to attend college. His first poems were published the next year. He was drafted into the army in 1961 and graduated from New York University in 1966.
He recieved the Pulitzer Prize in 1990. He was named Poet Laureate of the US in 2007. He has taught poetry at the University of New Hampshire since 1973.
Although not generally known as a Chicago poet, he was involved with some poetry workshops and poetry groups during his time in Chicago.
