Bill Knott was born in Michigan and spent most of his young life in Chicago. He taught poetry at Columbia College in Chicago in the early 70's, where he was an inspiration for several Chicago poets.
His first book was The Naomi Poems: Book One; Corpse and Beans. It was published under the name Saint Giraud, which was a pseudonym that died two years before the publication of the book.
He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2003. He is currently an associate professor at Emerson College in Boston.
