Beyond My Understanding

Beyond my understanding
Elusive and reserved
Your countenance withstanding
The hurt so undeserved

Naivete is tainted
When fantasies fall through
And expectations painted
Become a blurry view

Could premonition alter
The course decided on?
Did intuition falter
The plans that you had drawn?

I wish that I had warned you
I wish that I had known
Now we share disappointment
From which we both have grown
I wish it didn't happen
I guess you can't change fate
Beyond my understanding
Why often Truth comes late

If you had only chosen
The road on which I stand,
You'd never have been frozen
In someone else's land

I'd be your shield of virtue
Beside you, night and day,
For I could never hurt you
Or throw your love away

Your sensitive emotions
Ignored and misconstrued
By some whose only notions
Were in the realm of lewd

I wish that I had warned you
I wish that I had known
Now we share disappointment
From which we both have grown
I wish it didn't happen
I guess you can't change fate
Beyond my understanding
Why often Truth comes late

Too often it's the blatant
Somehow we cannot see
Until the knowledge latent
Becomes reality

My sympathies are with you,
For I know how it feels
To lose something of value
In one of life's ordeals

But rest assured on one thing:
On me you can depend
If ever you need something
I'm there for you, my friend.
