A Runners Meditation

While I was forced to take a break from running in the middle of the indoor season, thoughts from past competitions had a time to linger. To try and ease some of my "no-running" anxiety, I wrote this. I had some people read this for me, and although other athletes may be able to relate on the levels of anticipation of an event, only runners can know the experience of flight.

You know this feeling
[. . .That nauseous feeling . . .]
You step onto the track
[. . . Relax . . .]
Step into your lane
[. . . Who else is here . . .]
You survey the track
[. . . Wow this lane sucks . . .]
You survey the competition
[. . . Shoot, she beat me this summer . . .]
You inhale as you close your eyes
[. . . She’s not gonna beat me now . . . ]
You look at the official
[. . . Runners, take your mark . . .]
You step up to the line
[. . . Get set . . .]
Step into the blocks
[ . . . Roaring silence . . .]
Tensely awaiting the
[. . . 5 . . . 4 . . . 3 . . .2 . . .]
BANG!!
[ . . . 1 . . .]
You erupt from the blocks
[ . . . Breathe, breathe. . .]
Forcing every workout
[ . . . Catch her . . .]
Every drill
[. . . Gotta fly . . .]
Every ounce of strength
[ . . . She’s right there . . .]
And every ounce of will
[. . . Kick it in . . .]
Into the most intense race you could create
[. . . Breathe, Catch her, Fly, Kick, Breathe . . .]
You collapse
[. . . Water . . .]
And look back at your opponent
[. . . I won . . .]
You politely shake her hand
[. . .I won . . .]
And thank her for the race
[. . . I won . . .]
As you fall backwards
[. . . I won . . .]
And laugh at your greatest achievement
[. . . I flew . . .]
