splash deep murky puddles
washing the sidewalk.

Soggy cigarettes
scatter the sidewalk

Discarded gum
leaves telltale black splotches

all about the sidewalk

Fence-enclosed gardens
sprout stale drooping trees
(which do not like to be hugged)
ever few yards of the sidewalk.

Shoes step
legs walk
bodies carry themselves
