The Sign
He ran his finger along my scar
Remember man that dust you are
Spake the Image in the mirror
Old vestige of sorrow and pain
From breastbone to navel
a ghastly vein
The zipper of guts and desire
Remember man that dust you are
Passions within you burned with fire
Twenty years ago this message came
Tears of deep repentance rained
Washing a mirror badly stained
One last trial, one last scar
He marked me again from afar
Now a cross upon my stomach laid
Remember man that dust you are
By this sign of salvation made
Denial of self the debt to be paid.
Clearer now the message
of this burn
The time is shorter
- to dust you will return.
