Blue eyes hidden behind thick lenses watched as he walked into the room, an air of confidence and prestige surrounding him. The room seemed to have come alive the moment the beautifully sculpted Adonis entered, electricity crackling from him. A smile fixed itself on her face as she watched him making rounds with his friends, laughing and chatting away with other celebrities, virtually ignoring anyone who did not have a hold on fame. The smile wilted on her face, leaving only a sullen frown at that thought.
She really hated that thought. She hated that air of arrogance about him. He was just so completely perfect, in a physical way anyhow. He was, in her opinion and heart, so damn perfect. She held every male that came in contact with her to him, all failing miserably short of her too high of a standard. She wished with all her heart and soul that he wasnt famous. That he didnt have every female on planet Earth dying to be with him, therefore leaving him his pick. Yet, that was the way it was. He was in the league of beautiful models and rich and wealthy women. She, however, clearly was no match for those women. If she were, he would have noticed her in the four years she had worked for him.
A discontent sigh escaped her lips as her train of thought lowered her ego and self-esteem more and more. Why couldnt see her? Why couldnt see that her face lit up every time he entered room. Why couldnt see that she loved him with all her heart and soul? Why, in Gods green earth, didnt that man know that her knees turned to jelly and her heart and mind to mush every time he was near? Every time he smiled, every time he laughed? And why, for Petes sake, did he still believe her name to be Kara when her Christian name Sara had surely been mentioned before in his presence. She did, after all, work for the man.
She huffed angrily, upset with herself for allowing her heart to feel like this. Stop thinking like this, she whispered harshly to herself. Youre not going to get anywhere if you wallow in self pity, she reprimanded.
Standing off at the sidelines, she watched as he celebrated the end of tour party with his four friends, happiness shining from those oh so beautifully colored cerulean eyes. She smiled. Lord what he did to her when he smiled. Licking her lips, her hands clenching tightly as she once more resolved to make herself noticeable to him, she took a few bold steps towards him. The time was here. She was surely going to make him notice her now. And not just in a technical support co-worker way either. He was going to recognize her for the woman she was.
She had gone through such painstakingly measures to make sure that tonight, he would see she was a woman. A woman he would be interested in getting to know on a personal level. Her once badly permed hair had been ridden from the fizz it had existed in for years. It now rested at her shoulders and was no longer fizzy. It was sleek and shiny. Her regular bland wardrobe had been replaced. Where she once wore baggy jeans and any ole T-shirt, she now sported a nice form-fitting black skirt and V-cut red blouse, emphasizing her nicely formed chest. Her face, which once was barren from any kind of color, now stood out. Light lipstick and mascara that darkened her already thick lashes made sure of it. The only thing she had kept, as symbol of her old self were her glasses. Her eyes were far too soft for contacts. She prayed he wouldnt hold that against her.
Mentally preparing herself for the events that were to come, she continued at slow pace towards the man of her dreams, praying that now he would see her. Now, he would know that her name was indeed Sara and not what he called herwhen he did bother to call her anything at allKara.
This is it girl, that moment youve been getting ready for all day. Time to attract his attention.
With every pounding beat of her heart, she forced her feet to place themselves one in front of the other, willing herself to act normally, to not fail and humiliate herself. Stopping just a few short spaces of breath away from him, her hand shaking, she reached up and tapped him on the shoulder.
Yeah? he turned around, a smile on his face. Holy Heavens he was beautiful. She had known all along that he was mightily attractive. But now, this up close in person, she was at a definitive loss of words to describe just how beautiful he was.
Breath-taking. That was one.
I
I
she stuttered, making an ass of herself.
Yes? he seemed impatient.
I want to
To what? Tell him how much she loved him? Had since the moment she first came on tour with him and his entourage four years ago? Make love to him? To congratulate on you the tour, she covered nicely.
Oh, uh
he seemed confused. Do I know you?
Swell.
Well, she tried not to feel hurt. She did, after all, look different. I was on the tour also. Argh, this was just not so going the way she had hoped.
His brow wrinkled in confusion. You were?
Technical, she nodded.
Huh. What did you say your name was again?
She hadnt. Sara. But you probably know me as Kara, she internally made a face.
Sara
Sara
Sara, he wracked his brain. Nope sorry. Dont remember, he shrugged. I know a Kara, he offered.
Lovely.
Well, there were many of us on tour. Okay, this conversation was going nowhere, absolutely nowhere. She had had more enlightening conversations with her plants. And probably, so had he. What the hell was she supposed to say to make her noticeable? Nice body? No, she didnt think so. So, will you miss being on the road?
He shrugged. I have mixed emotions.
So do I, she offered. God, she was even boring herself. Maybe this was why she hadnt had a boyfriend in four years.
Yeah, he nodded, clearly looking for someway to get out of the conversation.
She wanted to weep. She had been obsessed with this man for four years. She had stayed on tour with him and his crew time and time again. Always coming back. Even when she had had better job offers. But no, she had turned them down because she knew she would be forced to leave him and that was unacceptable. Now, after all the trouble she had been through, he couldnt even bear to hold a five-minute conversation with her. Was she that dull?
Josh, darling! she heard the distinct high-pitched greeting of some female behind her. Gritting her teeth she refused to acknowledge to herself that the look that had crossed on his face was one of relief and male appreciation.
Laurel, he smiled brightly and brushed Sara aside as he welcomed the embrace of another woman. Envy was spewing from her, wishing with every fiber in her being that she was the one in his strong arms, inhaling that alluring masculine scent of his. Feeling that strong, hard body of his press against hers. She forced a smile on her face when they separated, both smiling adorningly at one another. She was positive now that was the embrace was over, Josh would introduce her to Laurel, the skank dressed in a barely there mini-dress.
What joke, she scoffed at her stupidity. The happy couple laughingly pressed past her, almost walking through her as though she were no more than air. Her hopes and dreams crashed down around her as they walked away from heras close as two bodies could get. Looking down, she refused to weep. Her jaw trembled, yet she refused to give into her emotions and have a breakdown right here. Looking up she blinked her eyes a few times, drumming it in her head, forcing herself to finally face reality. Even after her makeover, even after her attempts to talk to him, to befriend him, she would always and forever be invisible. With that realization, she closed her eyes trying not to suffocate from the pain of reality. The only man she loved, she was willing to love, barely knew she existed.
She was
invisible.
The End.
