Epilogue
Rain. Well, the weather was at least mirroring JC*s inner feelings. It seemed only right for it to rain today. The tears that JC had been crying for the past two weeks hadn*t been nearly enough to symbolize how sad and distraught he was. He wanted the sky to cry as well. He wanted everyone to cry. He wanted everyone in the world to understand what a beautiful person had been lost.
Much to his dismay, the one person not crying was Alona. He hadn*t seen her cry once since finding out that Alexa was*gone. He couldn*t say dead. She was just gone. The lack of tears from Alona had upset him greatly. In fact, he had been too pissed off to ask her why she didn*t appear sad. But he was about to find out.
Slowly, almost reluctantly, Alona stepped up to the microphone in front of the small church where they had chosen to have Alexa*s memorial service. She had been cremated so it had been easy to hold off on the service until everyone was out of the hospital. Alona hadn*t expected to be nearly as nervous as she was. She*d had plenty of times to prepare for this.
Clearing her throat, she smiled just slightly. "Alexa Miller was my best friend. One of the only true friends I*ve ever really had. I would gladly have done anything to save her. I tried. But I know I can*t blame myself. And I know I can*t be sad. Alexa wouldn*t want that. Besides, she*s not really dead. She*s just moved on."
A gasp caught in the back of JC*s throat as his eyes locked with Alona*s. Did she know? He hadn*t realized that Alexa had told anyone about their*unique*situation.
"It wasn*t hard for me to decide how to honor Alexa," she continued after staring only at JC for several seconds. "She always said she loved my singing voice. And I*m not sure that this song will give all of you any comfort at all. But I know that at least one person in this room will understand it. And that*s really all that matters to me." She looked up to the ceiling of the quaint sanctuary and smiled brightly. "Thank you for everything, Alexa. I*m sure our paths will cross again."
A strong Celtic string section and piano began to play in the background. Then taking a deep and steady breath, Alona began to sing.
Walking through the mists, she listens with her heart
Searching for someone to touch her soul
Shadows up ahead, hiding in the trees
She*s young but she feels so very old
Songs are running less, the silence of the night
Blend and mix together all around
Star-crossed lovers* path, they*re seeing through the dark
Two ancient paths where souls run aground
She*s lost upon the road
For ancient souls
She*s searching for someone
To make her whole
The other part of her soul
This treasure is her goal
Wandering among those hidden shores
Her heart is cold
It*s light is lost
She wants to be complete at any cost
She wandered the mists
Searched every world
She wants someone to share her love
Time is very old, for the wandering of souls
We*ve searched through many lives upon the earth
When we find our way we*ll miss the world away
With the union of two very ancient souls
She*s lost upon the road
For ancient souls
She*s searching for someone
To make her whole
The other part of her soul
This treasure is her goal
Wandering among those hidden shores
As the music faded, Alona locked eyes with JC once again. "Alexa found the other part of her soul. Most of us never get the chance to do that. Don*t be sad for her, JC. You won*t be apart from her for long. Fate will bring you back together again. True love never dies."
