Ch 1:

Melissa couldn’t believe her luck… her bad luck that is. On the surface, things looked absolutely perfect!
She was in Paris; city of lights and love. What made it bad was that she was here on business…
and even worse she was alone. Ironic part was that she had the most amazing boyfriend in the world; he’d just been
too busy to join her. Melissa jumped at the sound of her cell phone ringing.

"Hello?"

"Hi sweetheart."

The sound of Josh’s voice always brought a huge smile to her face.

"Hi honey… where are you?"

He sighed. "I’m still in New York."

"New York? I thought you were supposed to be in LA by now?"

"Yeah, so did I. Change of plans."

"What kind of change? Is everything ok?"

Josh couldn’t help but smile.

"Yes my little worrier, everything is fine. You know this business as well as
I do, things change at the drop of a hat," he paused, "How’s the trip going?"

"I’m in Paris without you… how good could it be?"

"I know baby. You know I wish I could’ve come."

She sat down on the park bench she’d been standing in front of and began to twirl her hair around her finger absentmindedly.
"I’ll be here for 2 weeks… any chance you can catch the tail end of the trip?"

Normally, this would’ve been the time when Josh would feel the first twinges of guilt. But this time there was a good reason he felt no guilt at all.
He was currently sitting in JFK Airport, awaiting his departure to Paris, France… which was scheduled to leave in about 15 minutes.
The surprise had been planned for a little over a week now. It wasn’t the only surprise he had in store for her either.

"I’m sorry Mel, but it doesn’t look good. But I promise if I see an opportunity to come,
I’ll be on the first plane there."

Melissa’s heart dropped.   She knew that was Josh speak for ‘I can’t come.’

"Ok, well, I have to get to a press junket for the movie. Call me tonight?"

"Of course, you know I will. Have fun honey."

“Yeah, sure,’ she thought sarcastically. She tried to make her voice upbeat as she spoke.
"I’ll try Josh.  I’ll talk to you tonight."

"Ok sweetie… I love you Melissa."

She smiled to herself despite the disappointment she still felt.

 "I love you too."
