Hummingbird
Selected Haiku
by Rosemary J. Gwaltney
sunny mountain ridge
vibrant between snow patches
hummingbird wings
clear still water
between slender grasses
frog circles
sun-dappled creek
weed caught in a waterfall
nods all afternoon
steeped in wonder
young face wanders from the book
his eyes like mine
hiking
into increasing sound -
waterfall!
between us
on the porch swing
her memory
so very hot!
even the crickets
are quiet
shadow in sunset
leaps in mad rushes through pines
chasing the train
between cottonwoods
creek's sibilant song whispers
over moonlit toes
morning glories
decorate once again
the dried Christmas tree

fragrant in soft wind
crisp yellow lace
first daffodil
great heron lifts wings
glides silently over marsh
shadow companion
small marble headstone
her one carved date damp with rain
precious seedling waits
morning train rumbles
a whistle through cedars
unzips the mountainside
in child's eye
compassion wells
pearl falls
brilliant sun dazzles
glow on mounting purple clouds
thunderhead afire
cedar tree
our initials still there
grown so high
sudden slurp in pond
salamander gulps insect
cat's eyes widen
