Course Description
This course focuses
on developing the skills necessary to become effective assessors of adult
learners. Students learn the fundamentals of traditional testing and explore
how to design alternative assessments in an electronic environment.
Interpretation of assessment data, strategies for tracking student progress,
and communication of results based on clear criteria and standards will be
presented. Critical assessment issues facing distance education programs will
be analyzed and debated.
Reflection What and why was standardized test created? That I will still never know, but we shared a lot of opinions about using these tools for assessment and evaluation. The difference between assessment (determining the KSA of a student) and evaluation (accountability) was discussed. I learn to become an effective assessor of adult learners by using different tools such as rubrics, portfolios, and other alternative assessments. I also had an opportunity to reflect on how assessments had impacted my life both professional and personal. At some point, one must determine how reliable and valid the assessments and evaluation are for adult learners. This was quite interesting learning how some testing centers determine the validity and reliability of standardized test. I think the facilitator, Rosalind Bailey, covered the objectives well.
