Quills- Haiku, Stories, Poems and more!

I like to write poetry. Want to take some of it, and put it somewhere else, or use it? Please only take if you are willing to put By Betsy Moss with it. E-mail or IM me, or in some way let me know you are using it. Get my permission first! betsynovelwriter@hotmail.com

Eat,
Do a feat,
Become a mage,
Or a sage,
Be a vet,
Get a pet,
Make a pun,
With a nun!

To make a rhyme,
Is so sublime,
Make it neat,
Add a beat,
Use a drum,
Or even hum!

All this fun,
Is almost done,
This real rhyme,
Doesn't have anymore time!

-----------------------

Human Life

Complicated, hard,
Unique, scary, long, happy,
Healthy, immune, sick,
Excited, Exasperated,
All what one feels, is.
------------------------

Home

Home,
Place of life,
Room, belongings,
Family, parents, siblings,
Secure, heritage,
Place of love,
Home.
------------------------

Cold, breezy, wet, grey,
Raining, fluttering leaves fly,
Dry and warm inside.
------------------------

I, the wind,
Blowing to and fro,
I take your caps,
From your heads.
I, the Wind,
Make the leaves blow,
I flutter them with delight.

--------------------------

To Mr. Sun,
So bright in the sky,
Who shines upong us,
Who bask in your rays.
To Mr. Sun,
Who makes the world bright,
Bringing sparkling joy,
To the soon- to- be- smiles on our face.

--------------------------

Dogs

Furry, barky, tricksters,
Bright-eyed, cheery
Cute and cuddly,
Sleepy and sweet.

---------------------------

Cats

Sleek, tired, eating,
Dozing, licking scratching,
Running hunting, sleeping.

--------------------------

Frog,
Eat a dog!
Dry some bones,
Make 'em knowns.
For then the dog'll come,
Making you happy and hum.
Joy, Joy, for the arrival of a dog who likes frog!

At Interlochen, and afterward, I have made great leaps and bounds in my poetry. I hope that the following show my growth.

I want

I want,
Peace like the fluttering of leaves in the forest,
Joy like the child's losing of their first tooth,
Sadness to be present only as much as a mouse's squeak,
Terror to be present as much as human eating aliens.

I want to,
Wander in the lush green forest,
Listen to the strumming of the guitar,
Sleep to the quiet sound of the waves rolling in and out,
Look at the stars glittering in the sky,
From the top of a mountain.

I yearn to,
Learn something new daily,
Find a positive way for people to know my name,
Cure any problem the world is facing,
Feed the world,
Bring homes to those without,
And that, that is what I want.
----------
Stuck Kid

A child in jail is like an energetic mouse in an itty bitty box,
Tapped, encamped, frightened, scared,
Lonely, mad, sad, hungry,
Angry, disgruntles, tired,
Unable to escape, missing parents,
Without friends, without care, without hope,
Abandoned, abused,
Neglected,
Without any hope.
----------
Drunken Death

The drunk fell into a coma like an animal running after it's prey,
Dizzy, world turning,
All of a sudden a bad end to a day,
And then everyone started mourning,
Deathday had come,
He was only a kid,
Life was all done,
Now they lowered the lid.
----------
Pine Trees

The trees are thin, green only at the top.
Like a one ended Q-Tip the trees are.
They shed their needles hurting those on the ground below.
The trees offer beautiful shade and homes to many animals.

Like a one ended Q-Tip the trees are.
There are only needles at the very top.
The trees offer beautiful shade and homes to many animals.
They dance in the wind, smiling down.

Like a one ended Q-Tip the trees are.
Looking like a guy with very fuzzy hair on top.
They dance in th wind, smiling down.
And he shows off his skills.

Looking like a guy with very fuzzy hair on top.
They shed their needles hurting those on the ground below.
And he shows off his skills.
The trees are thin, green, only at the top.

Three Ways To Look At A Dog

   1
Among the lush green grass,
The only visible thing,
Was the dog running.
   2
Flying like the wind,
After Homeless rodents,,
Their necks spurting with blood,
Bloody bones flying in the trees.
   3
Dog jumping over hurtles,
Into the lifelong fringe,
Dying in the depth...

So I was sitting alone, watching the first scene of Jaws, you know, they are sitting around, drinking, smoking, and then the guy chases after the girl who proceeds to hop in the water. A voice, like it was channelled into my head from the movie, came into my head. It was the shark. For my sanity, let me share what he said in his hyper, high pitched, fast voice. Ooh, look, a human, dinner, just got into the water, and she's running into me! Hey, this catching a snack is easier than I thought! She doesn't even suspect me! Hey! I just saw her! I am going to swim up to her! Oh my how lovely she tastes! I got her again! Oh the lovely taste of blood. Oh, you humans have no idea how good your blood tastes to me! If I could just have a real lot more of your blood, I'd be a very happy, rich shark! Oh well then, I got her other leg! She got away from me. But then came back! I got her again! I got her again! I guess I will just finish her off, since I have no idea what she is saying, but I am guessing she is yelling, "Eat me! Get me out of my misery!" So, I did just that, and it was sooo luscious. Then, I finished up by drinking all the blood that was left over. But even though it tasted bad since it was so watered down, I drank it all, just to wash down the rough bones of the human. I then went back to my friends and gloated about how I caught annd ate a human, who was obviously excited because she was pumping lots of blood. Oh, yum, I still have that lovely taste in my mouth. That was one pyscho shark.
----------
When slapped brutally,
Blood spurting off your face,
Your abuser laughs,
Starts crying of joy,
The attacking of they prey,
The authority coming up,
Begging the acceptance and recitation of one word.

One word with all that supposed meaning,
How could it?
Used freely without help.
Schoolchildren being told that it does help,
When it hurts, with no emotion to qualify.

What is it?
What one word has, or doesn't have so much meaning?
The word that is uplifting or depressing?
Sorry.

We tumbled over snow drifts,
The dog had to lead us over this tundra,
We are bundled up like eskimos,
Leaving foot prints in the snow.
The freezing air blows, whipping sharply into our faces,
Our clothing does nothing to help us through this cold, tundra weather.

Actually, not.
The snow drifts are merely places,
Where the driveway plows made big piles,
We have to carry the dog over the them, since she is too small,
Our clothing consists of our down jackets, mittens and hats,
The wind blows, but nothing like it would had we been north,
We aren't in the tundra- this is a suburban snowbelt winter!
Oh but we can fantasize...

The stars.
The stars are way up there in the sky.
Twinkling light years away.
I think to myself, are they even still there?
People see the already found designs,
Constellations.
I don’t.
I see, dots, ideas, plans, tools, waiting.
Just waiting.
What shall I uncover?
I look to see.
I find,
world peace, twinkling in between the dots.
Safety, shining through,
But wait. What else is there?
I spot the darkness, that holds in the stars,
I see it as time.
Time holding it all in.
I take these words,
As I wake up,
I put them on my paper, in my illegible scrawl.
I connect the dots, only finding odd lines.
Not knowing that this is it all,
the forty two, the key to the unsolvable.
In the wastebasket.

“Distressed Times”
Wither, wander, comrade, none,
Senseless barricade.

STOP DO NOT ENTER,
Declared, timeless, forever.

Senseless just as I,
Unknown unloved, hated, hateful, true,
Done.
For Never More.

Am I.
Once unknown, once scared, entrapped,
Beat, hung.
For never more.

Am I.

Once I was loved,
Scared me straight out of my willy.
She liked- loved- me,
But no one more,
For never more.

Am I.

I’ll never know,
Mama, Papa, my baby nor,
I won’t see ever again,
For never more.

Am I.

Here is a link to an excerpt of my story. Just click here! to see it. I wrote it at camp, most of it. There is more coming. That is only part 1. I doubt I will let anyone see any more. Also, this is totally unedited and everything. Only little bits. Remember: I typed all this up, since I write in my notebbok, on real paper, not on the computer! I know all the characters in real life.

  • Nick Harp- my creative writing teacher.
  • Julie & September- Director and Assistant Director of my division (IGM!) at camp.
  • Mark- a kid from school who's name I used- just because of a lack of a name!
  • Ariela- my bestest friend since 1st grade!
Keep in mind that the names of the people are used. I personally don't imagine the characters in the story look like the people who's names are used. As you can see though, I have woven an almost quilt, of the people from camp who were extremely beloved to me (not sayiing that if I didn't use your name you aren't beloved, it's just that Julie and September fit in well) and people who I missed while at camp. Again though, it is only the names. And no, I didn't miss Mark.
