There is much news to cover here today peops. Hold onto your hats.
Firstly, Local Flora in Autumn: Here's what we learned today:
Sedges have edges Also, here is a list of some edible grasses:
rice
More on this developing story tomorrow.
Also, a few more notes regarding our studies of Revolutionary Mexico. Review: You already know about the APPO (The Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca) and the EZLN (The Zapatista Army of National Liberation). Now let's take a quick look at some history. The first great civilization of Mexico belonged to the Olmecs. The Olmecs flourished between ca. 1200 BC and 400 BC. The Olmecs were based around Veracruz, North of Oaxaca, and South of the Gulf of Mexico. The Olmecs worshipped a jaguar god. We, the good people of Lisablog, give the jaguar god two thumbs up. If you must worship a god, make it a jaguar god.
Death Penalty Update: We regret to report that Donnell Jackson was executed by the state of Texas on Wednesday. We suggest a new license plate motto: "The Bloodbath State". The other bad news is that more executions are around the corner:
November 8: Willie Shannon, TX
We do suggest that you write to the governor of Texas, Rick Perry, at Office of the Governor
and the governor of Virginia, Tim Kaine, at
Office of the Governor
The Breeders' Cup 2006: Breeders' Cup Day is one of the best and brightest days of the year. Alas, this year it's been moved from NBC to ESPN, which means fewer of the common peops will be watching it. We are however, undeterred. We will be posting our picks for various races throughout the day tomorrow. A few notes now: We're proud to say that Sharp Lisa is running in the Breeders' Cup Distaff, Race 8. Go Sharp Lisa!
Re: the big boys in the 10th Race Classic, we saw Lava Man run at Belmont Park in October 2005, which was a crap race for him, but what a beautiful horse! We like Lava Man very much. And other old favorites will be out there tomorrow as well: Good old Perfect Drift is a seven year old who can still kick some ass. And Suave has the most excellent lineage: A.P. Indy was his dad, and Seattle Slew was his grand-dad. Then there's Sun King who works hard to place or show. And finally, Flower Alley has recruited a tough team of Johnny V and Todd Pletcher. We are not fans of Flower Alley, but we don't like to bet against the Johnny V and Pletch team. Coming Tomorrow: Renee and Huw in New York City and Cecil Taylor at the Iridium: A Photo Essay for the Peops.
