New Lisablog Features

Greetings Earthlings. Today we are introducing two new features to Lisablog: Iraq: the New Bermuda Triangle? and Great Couples in History.

It's true, stuff keeps disappearing from Iraq. UFOs took the weapons of mass destruction, and then giant vampire men from Mars took a whole cave-load of explosives back to their angry red planet and then the CIA took a bunch of non-Iraqis out of Iraq and hid them somewhere far from the realm of the Geneva Conventions. Don't blame me. Blame the New York Times. They reported it today on page A1.

Great Couples Update: Let's hear it today for James and Nora Joyce. They got married in London on July 4th, 1931. Go Joyces.

Coming Tomorrow: The Loch Ness Monster: Fact or Fiction? and Did William Blake beat his wife?

Allison and Jen's Thailand Update: "We just saw the world's biggest solid gold buddha that is 700 years old. we are on our way to ayuthaya, the medieval thai capitol....WE've seen a lot of holy stuff. Haven't eaten any bugs, but saw a real big flying cockroach, lots of stray cats and dogs. And a tray of roasted bugs for sale. Also, at the rain bar down the street from Chris and Mo's apt., we watched a Thai folk singer, who sang John Denver's Country Roads for our benefit--I feel a new affiniti with the Thai people. We ate cheese banana ice cream. But no snakehead fish, even though there are many for sale on the street. Tomorrow, we fly to the beach."

And now a Medieval Lyric:

Abu-L-Hasan Ibn Al-Qabturnuh

In Battle

I remembered Sulayma when the passion
of battle was as fierce
as the passion of my body when we parted.

I thought I saw, among the lances, the tall
perfection of her body,
and when they bent toward me I embraced them.

World News Update

World News Update: Okay, so someone stole a whole bunch of explosives from a cave in Iraq. If you happen to know where this stuff is, please contact the people at Lisablog. Harry and Bela have been dying to get their paws on HMX and RDX. No, they haven't told me why.

Fox Update: There are no foxes in Brooklyn.

Names of the Dead: Another Reason GWB needs to go: Johnathan Gadsen, age 21, of Charleston, South Carolina

Un-names of the Dead: 50 dead Iraqi soldiers-in-training, 6 people in Falluja.

Other News: There's some weird baseball stuff going on and probably there were some football games yesterday, and people in upstate New York are still freaked out about mad cow disease and a bakery on the upper east side burned down last night.

From all of us here at Lisablog, have a pleasant day.

what a wonderful world

London Update:This just in from Mina the Cat:

For those of you who don't know, Nelson won the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson was ugly. Nelson has a statue on Trafalgar Square and it is a tall and ugly statue. Nevertheless, he is my main man. He was probably as crazy as George Bush. He did something like maybe he defeated the French. Or the Algerians. Or some people in the third world. Let's hear if for Nelson and his statue.

New Cross Update: Mina is now resting on top of an unbound copy of Leslie Scalapino's "Dahlia's Iris" and it is raining outside and there have been no foxes sighted today. Let's hear it for foxes. And Leslie Scalapino.

British Airways Update: British Airways is pretty cool. The stewardesses all have funny accents and there is free toothpaste on the plane. Fly British Airways for the free toothpaste, yes.

New York Update: This just in: Miles Champion is still an American.

Forget about the sheep farm: No one has offered up a sheep farm yet. Thomas and I and the cats are very disappointed in the Lisablog readers' lack of access to sheep farms. However, we would be willing to settle for a modestly sized top floor apartment with roof terrace overlooking Central Park. Also, Lisablog correspondent Lisa will be on assignment in London during January and February. I need a job. I can do poetry readings, give lectures about homosexual occultists, and also I used to work as a dishwasher. If you know of any such jobs in London or other parts of the European Union, please email me at jarnot@earthlink.net.

All About New Cross

And now, a message from Mina the Great Cat of London. This post is going out to Harry and Bela. And to Cori, the greatest cat-sitter on the Eastern Seaboard.

Greetings earthlings, my name is Mina the cat and I live in New Cross, London, which is part of the borough of Lewisham in the southern part of the city. I am a black and white cat and I like to sleep on the sheepskin rug on the sofa. I also have a new toy mouse which is green and has blue and yellow feathers for a tail. My life in New Cross is a good life. It's a sunny day here and out the window I can see people entering and leaving the King Rooster Chicken Shack. Also, it's windy. Also sometimes there are foxes. Yes, real foxes, just across the road in the garden lane. And downstairs is another chicken shack, the Honey Pot. There is always plenty of spicy Jamaican chicken in my flat. And I should not fail to mention the salmon we had for breakfast. Thomas made an excellent breakfast of fresh salmon with fennel and dill on lemon sour dough bread with fresh red currants on the side. Also, when there are no foxes to watch or mousies to chase, I can go across the street to make cheap international calls at the internet cafe. Or how about lunch at the New China Jade restaurant? One tip for my American cat friends: the cars drive on the wrong side of the street here. And finally, some cat trivia. Here is the ethnic breakdown of the cat owners of New Cross:

65.9% White
3.8% S.Asian
23.4% Afro-Carib.
1.4% Chinese

Until tomorrow, chin up! and happy napping!

Stay tuned for the following important updates: why are there foxes in New Cross? what kind of crazy shit is Miles doing now that he's an American? what do they really sell downstairs at the Honey Pot?

visionary blogging

Heather's Blog So check this out: my friend Heather has an excellent blog where she is vision statementing and providing news about her pet rabbits.

Tomorrow there is a big race at Santa Anita: the Grade Two Oak Tree Derby. I like Whilly, the Irish horse, and Greek Sun.

And here's a tip for all you poetry lovers: why not subscribe to Thomas's excellent Tolling Elves magazine, the hottest publication in London? Yes. It is the hottest publication in London. Thomas publishes poets and artists in a folded newsprint format that will be delivered right to your doorstep and will really make your day. You can get twelve issues for $40. Recent Tolling Elves authors/artists include Peter Gizzi & Tom Raworth, Deirdre Kovac & Erin Wade, Brian Kim Stefan & Nicola Woodham, Kelly Holt & Murray Pert, Kevin Killian, Clark Coolidge, Allen Fisher, and so on.

And remember that your subscription will help to support Harry and Bela's new friend Mina the trans-Atlantic cat. Let's hear it for Mina. If you are ready, willing, and able to subscribe to a good poetry magazine and to support our furry friends, send an email to me at jarnot@earthlink.net or to Thomas at tevans21@hotmail.com.

Deconstructing Lisablog

It's true that Jacques Derrida is dead and that Harry and Bela have yet to deliver eulogies for the great philosopher across the Atlantic. Stay tuned for the cat's eye view of intellectual French dudes.

And this just in from the employee lounge at the library at UC Davis: (thank to Dr. Walleye):

The Trader Joe's lowfat peach yogurt in the fridge carries a "best before" date of April 26th (year unspecified). Owner please toss--space in there is at a premium.

And check out the cool work my man Tony is doing:

Now available online and at bookstores:

Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove

Voices of a People's History of the United States

Tony and Zinn do a book

The long-awaited primary-source companion to A People's History of the United States.

For this new book, Zinn and Arnove have selected testimonies -- speeches, letters, poems, songs, memoirs, protests -- from our rich history of resistance.

Here, in their own words, are:

Frederick Douglass, Bob Dylan, Fannie Lou Hamer, Cesar Chavez, George Jackson, Helen Keller, Public Enemy, Patti Smith, Tecumseh, Eugene Debs, Angela Davis, Rachel Corrie, Martin Luther King Jr., and hundreds of others.

Coming tomorrow: hat and bone update, photos of the handsome Burmese prince who has won my heart, Lisa takes another trip to London, and Alejandro's Excellent Galapagos Events in Brooklyn.

As they say in my hood, Peace.
