As a child is fascinated with a globe, may we treasure the earth. About 4.6 billion years ago, God created this planet Earth to be our home, the marvelous "blue marble", an ark for us journeying through time and space to our eternal home. We live in this unique, habitable world with just the right atmosphere and temperature for life. Within the global ecosystem, the biosphere, we are blessed with water and soil, abundant resources, diverse plants and animals, and humankind.

God designed the earth as our home. Do we take care of our home? What are we doing to protect, conserve, and restore our air, water, and soil resources?

Two thousand years ago, Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God, fully God and fully man, lived and walked upon this same earth, breathed the same air, drank the same water, and taught us about His Father. In the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, ordinary gifts grown upon and harvested from the earth are changed into the Real Presence—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus. Like Moses when he spoke with God in the burning bush, and Peter, James, and John when Jesus was transfigured on Mount Tabor, we are "standing on holy ground" (Exodus 3:5).

The earth is not a mere fragment of dead history, stratum upon stratum like the leaves of a book, to be studied by geologists and antiquaries chiefly, but living poetry like the leaves of a tree, which precede flowers and fruit,—not a fossil earth, but a living earth; compared with whose great central life all animal and vegetable life is merely parasitic.

—Henry David Thoreau. Walden [1854], in The Writings of Henry David Thoreau, vol. 2, pp. 340–341, Houghton Mifflin (1906).

Earth is here so kind, that just tickle her with a hoe and she laughs with a harvest.

God gives all men all earth to love,

But, since man’s heart is small,

Ordains for each one spot shall prove

Belovèd over all...

—Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936). Sussex [1902].

The power and drama of the earth's forces draw our curiosity and wonder. Earthquakes and erupting volcanoes are amazing displays of power yet sources of potential danger. May emergency systems be developed to better warn, protect, and rescue people from danger. At the same time, the interior heat of the earth presents a source of geothermal energy, an alternate source to the limited supply of fossil fuels stored within this same earth. May we care for the earth and use its resources wisely.
