Great are thy virtues, doubtless best of fruits,
Though kept from man, and worthy to be admired,
Whose taste, so long forborne, at first assay
Gives elocution to the mute
And taught the tongue not made for speech
To speak thy praise, thy praise he also who forbids thy use
Conceals not from us, naming thee the tree of Knowledge,
Knowledge both of good and evil,
Forbids us then to taste, but his forbidding
Commends thee more, while it infers the good by thee communicated and our want
For good unknown sure is not had, or had
And yet unknown, is as not had at all.
("Paradise Lost"; Milton)
The first sin. The first punishment. The first destruction. Lost of paradise by Adam and Eve and the origin of mankind.
The origin of mankind is indeed accompanied by his first self-destruction. Do you expect the progeny of crime to bear the flower of innocence? Do you anticipate progress from the mislayer of heaven? Do you look forward to virtue from the doer of sin? What else can you expect from this man but devastation. Hopeless is the man. Hopeless is this man responsible for his own destruction.
Over the years man has shown great advancements in all the fields of life. And especially has he shown his progress in the gain of scientific knowledge. Look at all the electronic and scientific developing aiding the life of a common man of today. We find so many vehicles on the roads today. Your agricultural produce has increased so much, thanks to the pesticides and insecticides. And you do not face the problems of many diseases due to the development of the medical sciences. Then there are media like radios, televisions and satellites. And not just this, but you have the fastest communication network through the world wide web of Internet. But then is it all worth it?
Yes the distances have really been reduced. There are trains and planes. There are trucks and cars. But there is smoke. There is pollution at the same time. Our atmosphere is having an adverse effect, which in turn is affecting our health. The ozone layer is depleting and I wonder how long is it going to survive the negative influence of all the environmental pollution. Some unknown poisons that man had been unaware of from the beginning of this world accompany the increase in agricultural produce. The soil is getting poisonous and so is the underground water. Not only the cattle, but also the people living in the rural areas are under its detrimental effects. Medical science has shown a progress but are we also thinking about the immunity problems faced by every individual in the present world. And at the same time have you ever thought about the mind pollution that has been created by the vulgarity of the media and the abuse of Internet. Envy your past where:
Crops turn golden,
The farmers reap
Together, the grain
They lay in heap.
The birds twitter,
The sun shines,
After all day’s work
Each one of ’em dines
With all of the others
In the lap of bliss,
Thanking the providence;
Divine voice ’tis
But at the present:
Farmers on rest
Machines now here
To do the reaping
Of grain, now sere,
The buzz of engines,
The dark of smoke,
Take all away
That idle folk
Lost by blissful vanity
Suffer in grief for eternity
Science in no ways is a foe. But the applications of science should be so as should not show any adverse effects to the human civilizations. Man in his rat race for money has forgotten about the comfort of other people. He is coming across such inventions as are harmful to the global community. The atomic warfare, for instance, is not going to lead this world to anything worth living in.
Today and now, we have to take an oath for saving our planet. What we are sowing today is what our up comers are to reap tomorrow. We cannot let them reap death and disease. We cannot let them suffer due to our faults. We have to take an initiative to make use of only those applications of science, which would not have any unpleasant effects on the human hierarchy.
An observation with extensive view
Survey mankind from China to Peru
Remark each anxious toil, each eager strife,
And watch the busy scenes of crowded life
Then say how hope and fear, desire and hate
O’erspread with snares the crowded maze of fate.
