A Farewell Speech

Ah happy hills! Ah pleasing shade!

Ah fields beloved in vain

Where once my careless childhood stray’d

A stranger yet to pain!

I feel the gales that from ye blow

A momentary bliss bestow,

As waving fresh their gladsome wing

My weary soul they seem to soothe,

And, redolent of joy and youth,

To breathe a second spring

Such is the feeling, such is the joy, and such are the sentiments for an institution that forms a man. A person without education is a flower without colour and fragrance. This is what we come to know later in our life but not when we are in that athenaeum.

Ladies and Gentlemen

I feel a little emotional today. I am surely not saying this because it is a part of my farewell speech but because I am about to leave a college where I had been for the last six years. And still I feel as if it is just my arrival in this institution. The best I would not say for there are better but best for me as I had my best time in it.

Moving back in the years, I see a young plump lad entering the gates of PAF Intermediate College Lahore. Sure was a tough time for him when his first step made him smell a great stink. What was the stink of? As we all know, the washrooms of course. Next he was led to the Principal’s office. And finally taken to the sixth grade. You really don’t want to know how it felt like. A room smaller than a clerk’s office with apparently some fifty students tightly fitted in shabby benches, just as you may have seen the chicken at poultry farms. Woeful was the sight indeed.

But years after, when I peak back into the history, I even find that pleasant. Why? Because it is associated with my college. A place with which I have really developed some affiliation.

Yet to mention is the fact that the prime time of the life of an individual is the time of his youth. And half of our youth is spent in the college. This is why college life seems so energetic and full of the zest of life. I have spent this spring season of mine in PAF Intermediate College, Lahore. I am really left with great memories and you can take my word for that.
