A Public Service Provided by the Students in

Ralph Black's Fall 2002 Poetry Writer's Workshop

The late Nobel Laureate, Joseph Brodsky, once said that poetry should be as readily available as tabloid magazines at the check-out counter of the grocery store, or as Gideon's Bibles in interstate motel rooms.

Our challenge for this course was to create a work of "public poetry" illustrating what we see as the function or role for poetry for the public.  We had a hard time deciding on just one "public work" and so decided to do several public poetry activities and to tie them all together with this website.

Another reason for this site is to gauge how many people were affected by our displays public poetry and how, and also what the effect was.  So please give us your feedback, browse the poems we have included on the site, and submit your own if you'd like.  We're very anxious to hear from you.
