Fields Of Dreams

Boots, Jeans, belt buckles, ranchero music, TexMex, Cumbia sounds, scarves
Straw hats, long-sleeve blouses and gloves
Worn by men and women exposed to the elements
Among rows of well-trimmed vines
Hoes thrown up and down
Tilling the fertile soil of the Central Valley of California
Irrigating each vine that will bear
Table grapes whose harvest will be blessed
By priests, farmers' wife and kids, workers and the whole community
The resting place will be the local supermarket's shelves
Then, ensues a weekly pilgrimage to that famous modern temple

Sweat running down their eye brows
Is wiped off by layers of clothes around their neck
Protecting them against the sharp sting of the sun rays
Passersby see shades of green, blue and red
Creating a vanishing set of riveting shadows
Of workers who dream great dreams; their kids hope
And believe in the credo of justice and pursuit of happiness
One hoe after another, one bucket at a time, they are advancing
Toward their goals
They move up and down the vanishing rows
Obstacles can be overcome with strategy, hard work and patience
Tomorrow, they will wit for a new gig by the road
Before dawn, they'll hitch a ride
From a companero and disappear once again.

The Fruit Stands

Summer in the Central Valley of California
Valley of fresh fruits and vast orchards
The season of strawberries, boysenberries, blueberries and sweet cherries
Is succeeded by the extended harvest of stone fruit
Up and down the Valley floor, roadsides
Are adorned by fruit stands of all shapes and sizes
They are temporary fruit meccas while their barn cousins have endured
Troubling change of ownership as well as weather
To become tourist destinations and relics
There is no celebration of Valley fields
Without the determination and sweat
Of those who nurture, survey and toil the land
A precious commodity, a piece of the American Dream

There won't be any harvest without hope
For snow, rain and water distribution
No harvest is possible without the farmers' hands, heart and brain
Stop by and sneak a sniff, take in the smell of freshly cut alfalfa
Causing a colony of multicolored butterflies to migrate to the nearby cotton fields
On the other side of the road. Oh, what a frightening sight!
They defy the fatal blows of passing vehicles to meet their ultimate goals
We, Valley dwellers, swim in this generous mixture of aromas
And sensory overload
Harvest time is upon us once again
In the back yard and on the swimming pool deck
Take in the aroma of all these fruits
Take a seat, raise your foot high and enjoy
Slices of sweet melons, cantaloupes, watermelons, honeydews
Take out your Weber and get the barbecue started
Get the fruit salads ready at once
Throw in chunks/slices of Asian pears, Kiwi, apples and other harvested crops
Cool off by getting into the pool
Watch the barbecue

From the field to the market
From the store to the freezer
Enjoy the delights of the season's variety of crops
Tomatoes, sweet corn, garlic, squash, onions, eggplant, peppers etc.
Ah, great Summer delights in the San Joaquin Valley!
From vegetable growers to specialty growers
From farmers to the pickers, everyone is harvesting
Take advantage of the Valley's bounty:
Taro, Chayote, donqua, moqua, opo, sinqua, parsley, green onions, yam leaves, okra leaves,
Okra, kabocha, basil, chives, long beans, bitter melon, darkon, lemon grass
There is no Summer without corn on the cob
Grill some juicy corns of the fields
Take a bite of a crunchy pear
Once for all, you are allowed to take time for yourself.
