WELCOME TO THE GREENFIELD, OHIO COUNTRY MUSIC STARS WEB-SITE.

I John Smith with ( EAST TEXAS COUNTRY MUSIC ) is stepping down from the office of East Texas Country Music to do bigger and better things in the Nashville area. I am turning this site over to Jeffery Allen Cropper to handle. He will be in charge of the play calling from here on out. This does not mean I am done with promoting Greenfield, Ohio country music. I feel that my part of this business should be focused on my new job in Nashville. I have switched the name over to Greenfield Country Music.

I got other important tasks to fulfill. I am going to change a couple things below and then turn this all over to Cropper. Thank you Greenfield, Ohio for your support & God Bless.

GREENFIELD, OHIO 45123 is a small Country town nestled in the southern part of the state. About 60 miles north east of Cincinnati. And 60 miles south of Columbus, Down in the farming area of the state. Greenfield has a power packed knock out punch in Country Music. It is the birth place of Country Music singer/songwriter and Legend Johnny PayCheck, ( Born Donald Eugene Lytle ) on May 31st. 1938 in Greenfield. Donny was performing in talent contests by the age of nine in Greenfield and around the state, riding the local rails as a drifter by the time he turned 15. He also hitchhiked around the country performing as "THE OHIO KID", playing in honky tonks, bars and clubs at the real tender age of 15, with a borrowed guitar most of the time.

He also recorded under the name of Donny Young for Decca Records in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Buddy Killen from Nashville got Owen Bradley to listen to Donny sing and got him the contract. Donny was the founder of the original Jones boys ( George Jones' Band ).

Greenfield also has several other famous Country Music Stars. Like The Adams Brothers for instance. Don & Gary who played for George Jones & Johnny Paycheck and several other top name musicians in the Country Music industry in the 1960's & 1970's. Don Adams had a recording career in the 1970's which yeilded some Great Country Music. He recorded for Atlantic Records and released an album called ( On His Way ) A record that didn't do to bad back in it's time. Johnny Paycheck wrote the liner notes for that album for Don. Don's brother Gary ( SHOW HOG ) Adams as he is called by his friends in the music business. Should be and I hope will be one of these days be known for being the ( Originator ) of that early George Jones & Johnny Paycheck sound. As I will point out later on in this web-site. It should be noted that Gary is a legendary guitar picker in the world of Country Music. He really laid down the path for the rest of the boys in Nashville to follow. And should get the credit do him. He went on to play for several other country greats after leaving the bands of George Jones and Johnny Paycheck. As a lead guitar player Gary didn't have no problem landing a job with Alan Jackson as a fill in lead guitar player from time to time. Gary was in a serious car accident in about the time frame of 2004 or 2005 that almost claimed his life with fellow musician, friend and songwriter Jim Bristly.

They were hit in the rear by a speeding car as they were existing down an exist ramp in Columbus, Ohio on their way home from a show. Gary has since recovered and now helps out at the Country Opry house over in Hillsboro, Ohio. Also Gary & Don's brothers ( Farrell & Darrell ) played with some top notched country bands in the Country Music Industry in the 1970's and 1980's. Darrell had some Demo recordings he did in the early 1990's that were never released to the public. ( But I have them for you to hear on here ). Darrell also played at local bars, clubs and honky tonks in and around Greenfield and the state of Ohio. And also preformed at the local Paint Valley Jamboree in Bainbridge, Ohio along with putting on concerts at the local Greenfield McClain High School there in Greenfield where his children went to school. Farrell also played for the Great George Jones from time to time when George needed a musician that could fill in that was close to him.( REMEMBER ALL THOSE EARLY GEORGE JONES - NO SHOWS - GEORGE GOT BLAMED FOR AN HAD EARLIER ON IN HIS CAREER AND IS SO FAMOUS FOR ), Most of the time he was in Greenfield, Ohio or close to it. I have a secret weapon in Country Music, a person I'll mention later on in this Greenfield, Ohio discography of Country Music Stars.

The Adams Family in gerenal was born with Country Music tradition in their blood. They had a sister named Marcie that when she sang would send chills up & down your spine with her lovely voice. A beautiful lady with a voice like an angel. The family recorded and released a gospel album in the 1970's and Marcie sang like an angel on it. Speaking of Angels. There was one in Greenfield by the name of Paul. Who recorded a lot of Great Country Music legends back in his day. Paul had a recording studio in the basement of his home and recorded the boys cutting up and having a grand ol' time and should be given a lot of credit for promoting Donny Lytle & Don Adams and Gary. Along with others as well. Paul Angel also owned a night club called ( The Club 28 ) in Greenfield back in the late 1950's an early 60's. Donny Lytle got his start singing & playing there.

Paul was instrumental in getting Donald Lytle & Don Adams started in the Professional World of the Country Music Recording Business. I want to dedicate this web-site to Paul Angel & his wife Donna, tho I don't know him or her personally. Paul Angel had a lot of heart and soul and did all he could to promote Country Music by getting those boys started in the Country Music recording business. Paul wrote a song that hit the charts back in the day called ( Big Town Baby ). As a promoter myself, I hold the utmost respect for Paul Angel.

Paul had also recorded a lot of other legendary Country Music Stars in his basement there in Greenfield during the late 1950's, 1960's & 1970's.

( Man' would I love to get my hands on those recordings ).

Donny Lytle or Johnny Paycheck as we came to know him. Also played for Country Music Giants Ray Price, Faron Young, Skeets McDonald, Porter Wagoner & George Jones. And recorded a lot of Country Music sessions in Paul's Basement in Greenfield with friends such as Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson & Waylon Jennings just to name a few.

Johnny got himself into some really bad trouble on December 19th. 1985 after he stopped at The North High Lounge in Hillsboro, Ohio in ( Highland County ) for a drink while he was on his way home to visit family in Greenfield. Johnny shot a childhood friend ( Larry Wise ) in the head at that bar. Johnny was arrested and put in jail. Waylon Jennings & George Jones went to Hillsboro to bail Johnny out and help their friend & fellow musician. After Johnny went to all his court appearances. And after all of Johnny's appeals were exhausted. On February 7th. 1989. Johnny entered C.C.I. ( The Chillicothe Correctional Institute in Chillicothe, Ohio ). The same place a fellow friend & musician that wrote his biggest hit song ( Take This Job And Shove It ) spent some time at as well. I talking about ( David Allan Coe ). Chillicothe is a town that is not too far from where Johnny once lived and grew up. After serving nearly 2 years in prison. Then Governor Richard Celeste freed Johhny on January 10th. 1991. Johnny's family and friends from home were there to support him through this rough point in his life. ( His Mom Cloe, brother Jeff, His sister, His son Jonathan, Wife Sharron, friend Roger Ross & Larry & Jane Adams, along with CBS executive & good friend Nick Hunter, ex-manager Glenn Ferguson was there to. Just to name a few ).

Johnny's friend and recording buddy Merle Haggard put on a concert From Inside The Walls There at the Chillicothe prison for the prisoners and the wardon in the early part of the 1990's.

( THIS ALBUM IS STILL YET TO BE RELEASED ) BUT HAVE I GOT A SURPRISE FOR YOU ) I HAVE A COUPLE SONGS FROM THAT CONCERT ON THIS WEB-SITE FOR YOUR LISTENING PLEASURE.

( I want to thank Larry & Jane Adams, Roger Ross & Jeffery Allen Cropper for the recordings of that concert ).

On another Greenfield Country Music note, Brad Martin had a hit song on the Billboard Country charts and made a video of it for CMT ( Country Music Television ) and G.A.C. ( Great American Country ).

The title being called ( Before I Knew Better ). Just one of many good songs you'll find on his album called Wings of A Honky Tonk Angel. Country Music radio stations across the U.S. and Canada played the song in an around the time of 2004 or 2005. It is a good song and people still request it to this day.

Also hometown Country Boy and Outlaw Jeffery Allen Cropper ( who I mentioned earlier ). Is that secret Country Music weapon I was telling you all about earlier on in this story I am telling you now about all the Greenfield Country Music Artists. He gave me a lot of good stories I am telling you about. While talking to him on the phone, I recorded our conversations and I am using them as a reference to write this web-site.

I hope these stories he told me are true. I really like Jeff, and I really don't have no reason to doubt what he says. I bet if you were to cut him, He would bleed Country Music. He is a bundle of Country Music facts. Jeff recorded a Country, Southern Rock Style ( Biker ) Blues album with his best friend & fellow musician Glen Powell. Who is one of Jeff's heroes. ( THAT ALBUM IS FOR ADULTS ONLY ). Jeff has been singing and recording since he was 7 years old, with friends like Nick, Eric & Jamie an friend John Anderson ( Raven ) Corcoran from Huntersville, North Carolina.

I had a guy from Greenfield tell me they nicknamed Jeff ( Arson ) back when he was 5 or 6 years old. That's really a young age. I really don't think I want to know why they called him that. But I can figure it out on my own as to why. Thanks Nick for the story.

Jeff has preformed around the country at County Fairs, Festivals, Motorcycle Rally's, Honky Tonks and Biker bars. I call Jeffery an Outlaw because just like his heroe Johnny Paycheck or Donny Young. However you know him as. Might think the two of them were related or something. And hell they just might be. ( I just wanted to throw that in there ). I want to thank Jeffery ( or ) Crop. as he is known around Greenfield, for lending me a lot ( If not all ) of the Greenfield Country Music talent and the Johnny Paycheck rare & scarce interviews that you are getting ready to download and listen to.

There is also another Greenfield Country Music Recording Artist by the name of Glen Powell A.K.A. ( Glen Ray ). Glen got the nickname ( Glen Ray ) from Benny Barnes an old friend he use to work with at McMullen Transportation there in Greenfield when he was a truck driver. Benny was referring to Glen as being the next Billy Ray Cyrus ( I just can't think of Glen being the next heart throb for America from Greenfield ). I think of Glen being more like Country Music Legend Mel Tillis. ( Get Glen fired up and you'll see ) But man can he sing. Glen headed for Nashville in the late 1990's and recorded a few songs on a minor label. Glen also can play a damn good petal steel guitar.

Just like His Heroes ( Lloyd Green, Buddy Emmons, Brother Jim Murphy & Norman Hamlet ). Glen has an uncle, another Greenfield, Ohio legendary steel guitar player by the name of Billy Powell.

Billy Powell played a lot of country music with a lot of famous people in his time as well.

A name that hasn't been brought up lately but in no way has faded away in the minds of Country Music Lovers from Greenfield and the surrounding area is little Melanie Haines, ( Who ain't little no more ). Melanie is from between South Salem & Bainbridge Ohio, but grew up in and around Greenfield. She attended school at Greenfield McClain High School. She sang in plenty of country bands growing up. But she is most remembered for her stint while singing at the Paint Valley Jamboree in Bainbridge, Ohio. A town not very far from Greenfield, just down the road on State Route 41 South out of Greenfield. Melanie has a pure sweet voice that captivates you right from the start. She is a pure country talent. ( Tho I do not have any of her recordings with in this web-site, I hope to have some soon. So please check back periodically ). I remember seeing Melanie Haines & Jeffery Allen Cropper singing when I was up that way scouting for talent back in the mid 1990's. I ended up setting there the whole show and I missed my appointment with the client I was suppose to interview and possibly sign. I wish I would have made some sort of contact with those two back then. But I had to hit the road and head towards Columbus. It was getting late and I knew nothing about that area at the time and I was afraid some hill jack would beat me up or try to rob me. Because The Paint Valley Jamboree was across the street from a bar. So as quickly as I could, I jumped in my Mercedes and got the hell out of that town.

Sean Poole is just another one of Greenfield's hidden talents. I remember seeing him at The Paint Valley Jamboree as well that night. Sean sings more contemporary style country of today and can play a mean guitar as well. Tho he is no Gary Adams. I only have one song that he recorded that him and Jeffery Allen Cropper wrote together. The song is about an x-girlfriend that the two of them use to share. I know that don't sound right ( but it's the truth ). Just not at the same time. The song is called ( She won't listen to a word I say ). And it is a pretty good written song that shows the songwriting ability of these two close childhood best friends.

The reason I put this web site together is so you the listener can get a taste of the kind of Great Country Music that has come from such a small town such as Greenfield, Ohio.
