More Family

These poems are for my Sister Diane and Brother-in-law, Ed, who have been there for me through everything, and for my sons, Rob and Chris who have been my reason for getting up each day since the day they were born.

My String

When I was but a little girl/ I owned a magic string/ From me to my big sister/ For she meant everything/ Precious was her name for me/ She used it all along/ But when I heard my given name/ I knew that I'd done wrong/ Our life was not a storybook/ But she protected me/ From those who tried to do me harm/ And things I should not see/ She wiped my tears and calmed my fears/ Then chased the ghosts away/ She'd dress me up in pretty clothes/ And hug me every day/ She taught me how to do the twist/ And bought me my first doll/ She'd always take me along with her/ When boyfriends came to call/ For if she went without me/ My world would fall apart/ My string would get so tangled/ And it would break my heart/ So she resolved to take me/ But it was understood/ That I could go as long as I/ Promised to be good/ Then came the man who took her hand/ And married her one day/ She brushed my cheek and swallowed hard/ As they both walked away/ I cried "Why are you leaving me?"/ My tears fell to the floor/ My string will get all tangled now/ Don't you love me anymore?"/ She turned to me and whispered/ Don't cry while we're apart/ We need no string, because you see/ You're right here in my heart."/ The years have passed and we have grown/ And still it's plain to see/ That she was right, we need no string/ She's forever tied to me

Modern Hero

You are my sister's one true heart/ The love is plain to see/ That you have vowed to cherish her/ Means everything to me/ But more than just her husband/ You've become a loving part/ A golden thread that's woven deep/ Within my grateful heart/ More than just a brother/ A mentor you have been/ A shoulder strong and steady/ A guide, a loving friend/ In laughter we have forged a bond/ In tears we've held on tight/ In darker times you've held me up/ You've championed my right/ I cannot thank you near enough/ For all the time we spend/ In conversations long and deep/ Your patience, without end/ If ever I shall be so blessed/ And once more say "I do"/ Let the man who wins my hand/ Be someone just like you

My Forever Gifts

The first time that I saw him/ Eyes so wide and curious/ Mouth set in a thoughtful pout/ All businesslike and serious/ The first time that I touched him/ His skin was soft as silk/ Dark hair framed haphazardly/ A face as white as milk/ The first time that I heard him/ A murmur soft and low/ His needs conveyed in such a way/ I could not help but know/ The first time that I smelled his scent/ I could not get my fill/ And even in his absence/ I am basking in it still/ The first time that I tasted him/ So sweet upon my lips/ Kisses from his perfect face/ Down to his fingertips/ My life has filled with wonder/ As years crept up on me/ That I could still recall so much/ In vivid memory/ Then barely as I blinked an eye/ This boy became a man/ How time could change my little boy/ I'll never understand/ The one thing time could not deny/ That I am proudest of/ His child's heart still beats tenderly/ With true and honest love/ These prescious gifts I'll take with me/ When my time here is done/ He gave them to me on the day/ That he became my son........
