What a weird time for a heartbreak, you may say out loud
With all the troubles in the world, how can one stand out in a crowd
Well if you read these words, you will see what caused this pain
You'll find it was from a little black dog, that got hit out in the rain
I was up at the local store, and a little black dog appeared
He would follow us through the parking lot, and through the door he peered
We gave him a fresh cooked hot dog, and then a doughnut snack
We went back into the store and smiled at him, while his little lips would smack
Everything was going well, the little black dog walked on
Thankful for the love we gave him, and his snack before the dawn
One of the workers left, and he was headed home
Steve and I were at the store, and then we heard the phone
Mike was calling us to tell us, "There's a little black dog in the road"
So I walked down the street and picked him up, as he lay there in the cold
His tail no longer wagging, his heart it ceased to beat
I wish I could have taken the place, of that little dog in the street
I gently picked up his body, that once held a soul so full of love
And knew that he was in Heaven, with his Maker up above
I took him back to MotoMart, and lay him in the grass
And for the rest of my living years, I'll wait for this 5:15 a.m. Heartbreak to pass
