The Leaves

“The Leaves”
by: daniel n. fesperman

We agreed to meet one last time,
I know it has been a while.
Would she ask me how I was doing?
And is she still on my mind?
Nothing needs to be perfect,
I’ll settle for catastrophe.
Life is spinning and I see a mirage,
Some leaves are falling,
but not hitting the ground.
It’s getting late and my mind is wandering,
It won’t be long, she’ll be here soon.
Will she remind me of times gone by?
Will I reach out or leave it alone?
Nothing needs to be perfect,
I’ll settle for catastrophe.
Life is standing still, nothing is moving,
The leaves stopped falling.
They’re lying on the ground.
As I wake from my dream,
I see the moon with an eerie glow.
I ask myself this final question,
Where was I when she didn’t show?
Nothing had to be perfect,
I’d have loved catastrophe.
Life is over, everything gone,
The leaves are misleading.
They’ve been cleared from the ground.
