Stone Angels
~ Cassie
Oh so cold
Perched here under the night sky
With only gossamer wings to keep me warm
And only a distant memory to remind me
Of how my heart can beat
A slow rhythm now
A cadence of love lingering
The course of blood slowed
Tears frozen by the chill of skin
Be home here or above
There’s nothing left but the plume
Of the last breath expelled
I ran into the world
Only to become a statue
In a garden of lost souls
Children stopped in a moment of joy
So that tendrils of vine may creep
Over their tiny, stone feet
The world echoes our laughter
While closing its doors to us
And immortalizing our ghosts
Turned away like the bruise upon the cheek
We are the ice upon the warm, warm earth
Tiny stone angels in a cemetery
Of people remembered
We are the relics stored for those you love
The flowers you place beside us
The flowers we are forbidden to touch
Take our eyes away from the gray
The stone angels walk the ground of the loved ones
Carved feet tender to the touch
And our cherubic faces
Cruelly posed in a solemn mask
No breath left to expel
No solace left to the night
No peace for the stone angels
No love for my still heart
We walk the ground of the loved ones
Our delicate feet heavy upon the ground
We are the ghosts, your children
We are the fading laughter of the world.
