Professor Jonathan Crane.

Once a professor of psychology at Gotham U., this brilliant, pedagogic, bookish redhead cracked. His other side was released onto a trembling Gotham City. Sadistic, cruel, intense, extremely intelligent and profoundly twisted, he rose to (in)fame as The Scarecrow.

Jonathan is a regular boarder at Arkham Asylum; and no wonder. He is completely obsessed with fear. The 'Jon' side is obsessed with learning about it, the 'Scarecrow' side is obsessed with using it. Both sides are maliciously consumed with inspiring it.

To Prof. Crane, fear equals respect. Or rather, it's better than respect. He compensates for all the abuse of his childhood in this way, by being Scarecrow. He was tortured by his peers as a child and teenager, for his tall, lank figure and bookishness. They called him 'scarecrow' as a taunt. It's rather ironic (he must enjoy the irony) that he uses this name later to take revenge on the world.

He identified strongly with his literary hero, Ichabod Crane. He loved the book, and reread it many times... though it outraged him that Ichabod was, in the end, bested by his brutish rival.

speculation/rambling: he loved The Legend of Sleepy Hollow... so do i... s'one of my favorite books, actually. ick, bet he'd have hated the movie (doubt he saw it...). i don't even associate the movie w/ the book. the best part of the movie was at the end when i made shadow puppets w/ my hand on the screen.

but i digress. what i was getting at, was i wonder if he has similar taste in books as i do. wonder if he liked Catcher in the Rye? i loved it. ooooo, it'd rock if he was a LoTR fan. i bet he liked Dracula, too. that was a really awesome book actually, go read it.

gee, i bet i'm wrecking the ambience of the page by going off on this random tangent.
