My Friend Lynn...
Big girl who was afraid of the grim reaper,
She was walking tall today,
She was helping a friend along her way,
Like the day we did "Shattered Dreams",
A bad tragedy had caused emotional screams.
A fire in the night had caused alot of strife,
Two precious children had lost their life.
Pain so great one girl could bear it no more,
She broke down and began to cry,
Right there in the halls of Lufkin High.
Who do you think held her in BIG strong arms,
As if she were a baby to protect from harms?
It was My Friend Lynn...
One who played with plastic knives in the hall,
One so afraid when on "Shattered Dreams" Day,
The Grim Reaper came to make his call,
But for today she put aside her own silliness and fears,
And simply held her friend while she shed her tears,
The moans came from so deep in the soul,
My Friend Lynn, held her while she let it go.
It was tragic, I could tell by the sound of her cry,
I offered them the privacy of our office, without asking why?,
That is how I found out about the loved ones the fire had taken away,
Now I understood why they cried today.
Precious children they were,
For this pain there was no cure.
A baby girl just four months old,
A small boy just six years, lost in a fire, was what they told,
Left alone by their Mother, thinking nothing could harm them there,
She had ran off to where?
She had just ran the Daddy off to work,
Naturally, they called this mother names, as they thought she was a jerk.
For while the children slept,
Smoke filled the house as a fire leapt,
From seemingly out of no where,
The smoke filled their little lungs as they slept there,
Off to heaven they did drift, never waking,
They would be so missed, her heart was breaking.
The little boy came to her house everyday,
He called her Auntie as they did play
These children were like her own,
She began to reach for the phone.
The girl decided to call home,
Here at school she felt alone,
She needed to be with her family now,
As they sorted through the why's and how.
As the girl called home to share her fears,
My Friend Lynn was fighting back the tears.
Humble now, no longer the arrogant girl,
This tragedy had her mind in a whirl.
"Thank You", she said, with her head bowed,
As I told her how good she had done.
Feeling emotion, I quietly replied, "You are welcome, Hun."
I was moved by her compassion for her friend,
But our quiet peace soon did end.
Someone at home on the other end of the phone, could not feel her pain,
We watched as the hope from her face began to drain.
Someone at home was hurting too,
And did not know exactly what to do.
They thought she should just stay at school,
For us who watched it seemed quite cruel.
A suggestion to go to the counselor was made by the teacher,
I agreed, for I had done all I could do, to reach her.
So deeply moved, home was where this child wanted to be,
Away from the confines of a school room, she needed to be free.
The teacher made the suggestion again,
The counselor, Betsy could help this girl,
I hesitated, my mind in a whirl.
I was recalling what Betsy had just been through,
She had recently lost a loved one too.
I hesitated but the voice inside said, Ok,
So to that 'Sweet Angel Betsy', I lead the way.
Knowing in my heart she could help this child.
I had watched her before, she had a manner so mild.
So off we did go, but not alone,
My Friend Lynn went along.
She was her friend's strength, holding her again in those BIG strong arms.
Being her guide down the hall, there to protect from any more harms.
When we reached Betsy's door,
I was assured once more,
I had made the right choice,
I could hear it there in Betsy's voice.
"Oh yes, I can help, come on in."
In that second my confidence she did win.
I left them there in Betsy's care,
I knew that was where,
They would receive help of the best kind,
Betsy is simply "angel defined".
She called that girl's mother and talked to her staight from the heart,
Telling her what would be best right from the start.
She told the mother how she had recently lost a loved one too,
How she could relate to what she was going through,
And home was the best place for her to be,
Away from school, home to cry her tears free.
Finally convinced, the mother agreed home would be best,
And once again, Betsy had passed the 'Sweet Angel' test,
She gave that girl a ride right to her door,
Something she had done plenty of times before.
Later I learned,
That while in Betsy's office, this young girl cried out her heart,
And My Friend Lynn, big as she is, done her part.
She cried too with her friend,
The tears rolling down her chin.
This surprised everyone who knows My Friend Lynn,
They thought it must be her "good twin",
She is usually so big, bad and tough and mean,
But it did not surprise me, for I have "viewed her scene".
She really has a big kind heart,
That is why this day she did her part,
She was touched by emotion and cried with her friend,
Perhaps for the first time in a long time, tears rolled down her chin.
Again, it sure seemed cruel,
My Friend Lynn had to stay behind at school.
She talked about the loss of a loved one she had gone through,
That is how she knew what to do.
She was simply using The Three R's:
Restate, Relate and Resolve, which is always best,
And from her reaction she also passed the 'Sweet Angel Test',
She simply held her friend while she cried,
About the children she had loved, who had died.
That's My Friend Lynn,
And I will say it again,
Good at heart though rough on the outside,
But if you ask her, she will tell you I lied,
She wants to hide that big kind heart,
But this good deed went down on the chart,
The Big Man Upstairs is not through with her yet,
Hard to tell where she will end up at.
I have hope in my heart she will do alright,
For I believe she has seen 'The Light',
Please keep her in your prayers,
Help me raise her to the Lord who cares,
For He alone can change the roughness with his love,
Give her peace and hope from above.
After all, she is one of his children too.
Turn her over to Him, that is what I will do.
Also the family and friends of these children lost to this fire,
God's Comfort be with them is my desire,
If there can be anything good come from this "Time to Weep Season",
Just the reminder not to leave your babies for any reason.
Also to let My Friend Lynn see she can be a help in time of need.
Thank You, to My Friend Lynn for her kind deed.
