The Little Man's Secret
By Rhonda Cooley - May 1980

One day a little man started out on a trip,
He went part way by plane, part way by ship.
Then one day to the mountains he came,
And had no way to go around them in his search for fame.
"I'll just face them head on," says he,
Then when I succeed, people will really respect me.

On and on he went alone,
And as he climbed, he wore his fingers to the bone.
He finally reached the top one day,
"The rest of the way down shall be easy," was all he could say.

So down he started, so easy it seemed,
And with each step his face began brighter to beam.
And when he reached the bottom, triumphant shouts came from his mouth,
They rang in echoes from the north to the south.
And in amazement, he began to wonder,
Just where that mountain had vanished that was way up yonder.
And as he slowly turned his head,
He discovered that the mountain which once laid in front was now in back of
him instead.

The little man then went far and wide,
To inform others of his secret with pride.
"Just what is your secret?" one friend said to him,
And the little man exclaimed, "To conquer those mountains we all must face,
the secret lies in just facing them!"
